Passing Gas in Yoga Class

Do You Skip Yoga Class If You're Gassy?

How's this for TMI? A friend sent me a text last week saying she was skipping out on our regular yoga date. She was a little embarrassed but admitted that she was feeling, "well, uh, gassy." For those of you who practice yoga, it's easy to understand why she felt like staying home. Passing gas during yoga class is not the most comfortable subject to talk about — or experience firsthand! Fitted yoga clothes, a quiet room, and poses that twist around your digestive area? It can be the perfect recipe for passing along an unwelcome gift to the people around you. I mean, yoga is all about letting go, right? But what do you do in this sort of situation: accept that your innards might get a workout too or stay home and avoid possible embarrassment?

I have been in yoga classes where people have farted. Silent but deadly. I nearly fell out of my head stand gagging. If I were gassy and I know it would be bad, then yes, I would skip the class and do my workout at home.

@Digistrom, I almost spit out my orange juice when I read your post lol. If I know I'm feeling a little off, which is frequent since I'm lactose intolerant, I try to take something to ease it about an hour before I know I'm going to be doing any group activity that might cause me to "let go." Otherwise, I just go home and do yoga in privacy or do something where it might not be as much of an issue - such as playing frisbee in the park. Freeing, fun, active, plus I'm outdoors and at least 25 feet away from the nearest participant lol.

I avoid yoga and most gym classes for just this reason ;)

this is funny but a fact of life. I don't do yoga so fortunately I don't feel as much in the spotlight but I would be lying if I said I never had to warn my trainer now and then that it was just one of those days.

I've been going to various types of yoga classes for years, and I've never seen anyone fail to control their bodily functions, so I put 'no.' Maybe I'm blessed in that I've never been prone to stomach issues, but I can't imagine this ever being a problem.

this is one of the many reasons I exercise at home.
