Petroleum and Mineral Oil: Bad News For Your Skin

We all know crude oil, sometimes called petroleum, is a fossil fuel that was produced deep in the earth through a process that took millions of years to complete.

Today, almost all of us come into contact with a derivative of petroleum every day. The world is full of products that come from petroleum - gasoline, Styrofoam, lubricating oils. Did you know that cosmetics contain fossil fuels too.

Mineral oil and petroleum are the basic ingredients in many beauty products today - and both come from fossils fuels (gross).

By locking moisture against the skin, petroleum and mineral oil sit on the skin’s surface and can potentially block pores. This may cause the appearance of pimples because the skin cannot properly breathe.

The use of chemicals such as petroleum can also increase your risk for developing skin cancer.

Fit's Tips: Go ahead - check the ingredients on your foundations, cleansers, and moisturizers. If you see mineral oil or petroleum, you may want to ditch them and look for other products that are crude oil free. Also, propylene glycol, isopropyl alcohol, ceresin, toluene, benzene, petrolatum, and paraffin are all derivatives of petroleum, so you'll want to avoid these as well.

Ack! Never put petroleum on the skin! Remember that everything we put on our skin gets into our system. Use products that only contain natural (or better yet) organic plant or food best ingredients. I formulated my own line of Hair care products ( because even as a stylist I couldn't find products I wanted to use on myself or clients. Hair products containing petroleum damage hair and strip the hair and follicle of all moisture creating frizz and stifling the hair. Also, remember that everything you put on your skin goes into your scalp and will get into your system.

I have found that almost anything mineral oil can do olive oil can do better. Way better. I used mineral oil to remove eye makeup and noticed my eyes aging and fatty deposits (clogged pores) developing beneath my eyes. Also the trick of putting mineral oil/Vaseline on your feet and then socks... try olive oil. I've lived in Northern Europe for years (very cold and dry) and found olive oil to be a life saver. Also using it in cooking seems to moisturize from the inside out...

Thanks for reporting on this, Fit. I started to avoid those ingredients in face and hair products, but I know they're still in some body lotions I use. I do agree with redegg that using products without those ingredients makes a huge difference. Many commercial hair products directed towards African-American women are filled with those ingredients--with the promise of being "moisturizing"--but they don't work nearly as well as the natural products I use now.

Mineral oil definitely causes pimples and clogging- I read this in high school and got rid of all my proucts with it and it made a huge difference! I think most products of good quality nowadays do not use it.
Butrfly4404 Butrfly4404 10 years, too, huh? I'm in the Tundra...I mean, MN. So..I use Vaseline A LOT. (Put it on your feet, put some socks more dry feet.) But now I'm gonna get FOOT CANCER??? (Wait, is that such a thing?) Seriously, though, that's disturbing.
