Over the weekend, I made the epic trip up to Marin County from San Francisco to visit a spot I'd been looking forward to visiting for weeks. No, it wasn't the beautiful Mt. Tam, with its sweeping views of the Bay, or a dockside restaurant in Tiburon — it was a running store!
When I was on the hunt for a podiatrist in the city, a fellow runner in my pace group at San Francisco Road Runners recommended I visit Arch Rival Sports, an athletic shoe store in Greenbrae, CA that not only specializes in running shoes, but also has an experienced podiatrist on call on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Sundays. I hate visiting the doctor and scheduling appointments, so this was perfect for me!

Arch Rival has another store in nearby Mill Valley, but Greenbrae is the only location with a podiatrist. When I stopped by on Sunday, I was greeted by Harry Hlavac, a longtime podiatrist and former runner who's also developed a line of foot comfort products. According to Harry, my previous shoes — Brooks Adrenalines, which had been selected by a running specialist at Fleet Feet — were too small and didn't provide enough arch support. He put me in Brooks Addictions in a size larger, for better motion control, and tried several arch supports until he found one that would address my plantar fasciitis issues.
I left one happy camper, hopeful that I'll be training for my next race with fewer aches and pains. I can't wait to break in my new kicks. I left wondering: Why aren't there more shoe stores like this for runners?!
