Poll on Flu Shots

Will You Be Getting a Flu Shot?

I didn't need Dr. Oz or Mia Hamm to tell me to get a flu shot. I live with two school-age germ factories, and for the past three years, the whole family has gotten vaccinated against the flu. You can get a flu shot at your physician's office, at most Target stores with pharmacies, or many drugstores. So tell me . . .

@runningesq I think Juicebox meant chemicals "like that," not all chemicals... i.e. ones that aren't necessary for life functions, and that are shoved down our throats (figuratively, i know it's a shot ;)) by our own governments just to profit a couple of pharmaceutical corporations. The last time I checked, the polio vaccine doesn't have to be re-administered every year and actually protects against what it's supposed to so I don't really see how the two are comparable aside from the very basic definition of 'vaccine'.

I think we should get rid of the vaccine altogether; Let Darwinism take it's course.

i'm with danak, i work in customer service and deal with sick people all the time. i wash my hands frequently, and have a healthy lifestyle. the one time i got a flu shot i ended up in the hospital six weeks later with the worst flu ever.

No. I've known too many people who got sick after getting the flu vaccine. I haven't had the flu in over 7 years and I've worked customer service jobs handling money the entire time. I wash my hands and maintain a healthy lifestyle.

Up until last year I had never gotten the shot, or had the flu, but now that I'm in the military they require it so I'll be getting it again this year (not that I'm complaining - it's not a painful shot and if I can prevent other people and myself from feeling crappy then yahoo!)

I've never had a flu shot, and I never plan to get one. Many others have already given good reasons for it, but I'll add that I have a very good immune system, and I rarely get sick. When I do, my body fights it and I get better. Life goes on. Case in point: two months before our wedding, my fiance came down with mono. I didn't get sick at all, and we lived together, shared food and kissed regularly. Thank goodness he got better in time for the big day!

Really, juicebox07? Were you vaccinated for MMR as a child? The reason we don't have diseases like polio in the U.S. anymore is because of immunizations. I think it's funny when people say "oh I don't put 'chemicals' into my body." Water is a chemical. Everything is a chemical. Anyhow, I never got the flu shot until I was pregnant and my OB said that me and DH should both be vaccinated.

no I dont think the flu shot is necessary. I never get one and I rarely get the flu while others who did get the shot still manage to catch colds and slight cases of the flu.

Eh.. I really don't want to because it sounds a little shady in my opinion. But, since I start nursing clinics in November I guess I have to =( wahh

Nope, what Zulkey and LeiraElle said.

I got the flu about 10 years ago and I was so sick, can't remember much about 2 weeks of my life. I've got the vaccine ever since and haven't been sick. Worth a sore arm for a couple of days.

Zulkey - I could not have said it better myself :)

No. I don't like to put chemicals into my body like that. If I get the flu, I get it. Although the last time I had it was 6 years ago. I try to get a good Vitamin C intake to help fight off sickness.

I work in a hospital, so I get one because I don't want to get any inpatients sick if I come in carrying the virus or something. They're free, so I might as well.

I'm military so I have to get one, but I'd do it anyways. Yes they do work. Last fall my husband came home with the flu, and I had to take care of him. I'd gotten my flu shot a month earlier and I have no doubt that it helped me avoid catching it.

Nope. Don't believe it does anything useful. It doesn't protect you from anything, in fact it usually causes more harm than good. It's just a scam to get money for pharmaceutical companies.

I would do it if I spent any kind of time around kids or sick people, or if I worked a job where I came into contact with people a lot like cashiering. But I don't, and I really never get the flu.

GirlOverboard, you're a good sister :) I'd love it if my brother got the shot to be on the safe side since he'll be around my baby during flu season. Luckily, he has to get it anyway for work (at a hospital)!

Yes, I am getting it. As Leira said, pregnant women have a higher risk of complications if they catch the flu. My understanding is that it is impossible to catch the flu from the shot. There is a tiny chance from the mist, but I won't be getting that as pregnant women cannot.

No. I can't I'm allergic to the suspension agents in that particular vaccine. And as someone who had the 1970s round of Swine Flu, I am prohibited from ever getting a flu shot. I stupidly did get the flu shot about 6 years ago (because of the job I had at the time involved coming in contact with tens of thousands of people everyday) and got seriously ill. I ended up with pneumonia, an inflamed heart, swollen joints, and basically the worst flu you could ever get. Mind you my siblings have no problem with the flu shot but then again they did get Swine Flu when they were 5 yo either.
