A Prescription to Exercise: Why Not?

Next time you're at the doctor, don't be surprised if she gives you a prescription for exercise. After all, doctors give us instructions in almost all areas of our health, why not fitness too?

As it turns out a new finding from the University of Michigan Medical School, is advocating doctors prescribing exercise. Literally writing down on a prescription pad exactly how much a patient should walk or exercise day by day will encourage them to start moving more so than if the doctor were just to tell them what they need to do.

I'm really glad to hear about this. There's so much that people can do to stay healthy without spending money on prescription drugs and fancy equipment. I've heard that people can maintain a basic level of fitness just by walking everyday!

Great idea! Even better if people heed the RX.

i think it's brilliant. some people just don't know what to do or where to start. having an actual prescription telling you to walk 3 days a week for 30 minutes is a great idea. whatever exercise that's listed will do.

I agree. My headaches, skin problems, depression, and stress disappeared when I started working out and eating healthy.

lmao jhuck, I was about to comment about the same thing. I am a pharmacist and I know exactly what you are talking about. People come in with scripts for band-aids or some other item I can't fill and get all upset because it's "not a real prescription."I love the idea, though. So many doctors will tell you to lose weight/diet/exercise, yet not give you any further guidance. The sad thing is that so many people would rather get meds; they go to the doctor with the expectation that they can get magic pill for whatever their problem is. To me, exercise is far better than anything that can be found in a pharmacy. My motto: more motivation, less medication.

Well, why not? I know someone whose doctor gave him a prescription to have sex a minimum of 3 times a week to de-stress. His wife was a new Mom and wasn't happy about that at all!

I can just see how this is going to work in the pharmacy. I can almost guarantee some people are going to try and get me to fill this for them.
