Reasons to Take an Afternoon Coffee Break

4 Coffee Break Tips to Boost Your Energy (It's Not Just About Caffeine!)

We are pumped to share one of our favorite stories from Self here on FitSugar!

Are the words "coffee break" kind of an oxymoron to you? Probably so if you are just guzzling your grande while you are still at your desk and barely even looking up from your work. While it's true that caffeine can provide you with a jolt of energy, taking an actual break to enjoy your coffee could be the key to getting a better energy buzz from your cup of joe.

The folks at Gevalia introduced me to the idea of fika, the traditional Swedish coffee break that Swedes take two times per day to enjoy a cup of coffee and a snack. Self has reported that taking a true coffee break can leave you feeling happier and more sociable. I thought the idea sounded interesting and I gave it a try for myself and found that I felt more energized from the combination of stepping away from my work and drinking the coffee than I normally do from just downing my java on the go. Read on for some ways you can enjoy a fika of your own.

  • Step away from your desk. Grab a friend and go out for coffee or at least head to the break room to truly give yourself a mental break while you enjoy your coffee. Fifteen minutes is all it will take to feel refreshed, and you will be able to work more efficiently after taking a true break.
  • Add milk to your coffee. Enjoying skim milk in your coffee is a great way to turn your cup of coffee into a true power snack. Not only will you get the benefits of caffeine, but the protein in the skim milk will help keep your blood sugar levels in check so you can focus on the tasks at hand. As an added bonus, Self has reported that the amount of caffeine in one cup of coffee can help you concentrate and feel more alert at your desk.
  • To get even more benefit from your coffee break, combine your cup with an energizing snack like low-fat yogurt with berries, a couple tablespoons each of raw almonds and raisins, or a little peanut butter on a piece of whole-wheat toast. The protein-carb combinations of these snacks will provide both quick energy from the carbs, as well as longer-lasting energy from the protein. Eating them with your coffee during a true break will help you slow down and truly savor your snack too.
  • End your coffee break by using the last five minutes to take a brisk walk around the office or do some light stretching. This will get your blood circulating again and help you feel energized before returning to your desk.

How do you get the most out of your coffee breaks?
