Revamp Your Cardio: Move Your Feet

One way your body may be getting bored with your cardio workouts is that you're always working the same muscles over and over again. In order to constantly be challenging yourself, it is a good idea to use different machines. OK, but what if you own an elliptical machine at home?

Don't worry, you can still switch things around (and still use the same machine) simply with how you use your feet while on the machine. Use your toes to really work your quads (front of your upper legs) a little more. Use your heels to really work your booty and hamstrings (back of your upper legs) a little more. I like to alternate two minutes of pushing with my toes with two minutes of pushing with my heels. You can also try this while biking and while doing stairclimbers.

Fit's Tip: I also find that this technique can help with toe numbness, which can be a big problem.

i'd love to run at a park or something but in florida that option is gone after june(for me anyway the opressive humidity is to much for me to exercise much outdoors) so the gym it is, i will try this!

that's a great idea. i love the elliptical machine. i also position my feet differently on the pedals, like pointing my toes out, so that i work my outer-butt muscles (don't remember what they're called). not sure if i'm actually doing anything, but i can feel a burn after a while.

I naturally am on my tip toes (i started walking that way when i was little and never could stop) and on the elliptical, i am on my toes. I actually find that it causes a little more numbness that way, but i just adjust my footings and keep on going.

Im really not a fan of working out with techniques,racing bike for example.I like jogging aroud the park or on a playground.As long as I'm outside,free to breath.

I should have done the toe-pushing movement today since I was on the elliptical at the gym! I've heard that it's best to have your feet flat on the steps while you move. But maybe it's O.K. after all to use more power from your toes and raise your heels.
