What we liked: Most of us liked the complex flavor of Organic Bistro's Ginger Chicken ($6.50) — which included a mix of green tea, orange juice concentrate, and orange oil along with ginger chicken and almond pilaf — and that it wasn't overly sauced. Packaging-wise, we appreciated that everything but the plastic film was recyclable or compostable.
What we didn't like: This was one unappetizing-looking dish! The vegetarian-fed chicken looked like scrambled eggs, and the vegetables were dry in both taste and texture. While most of us liked the orange flavor, one editor thought it was too overpowering ("It tastes like Fruity Pebbles"). We also didn't like the fact that straight out of the microwave, this dish looked absolutely nothing like the packaging.
Nutritional highlights: The ingredients list is stellar for a frozen meal: no artificial ingredients and an easy-to-read list of identifiable foods. Calories: 360, fat: 14 g, sodium: 430 mg, carbs: 37 g
Final verdict: Most of us liked the taste, and it was nice that Organic Bistro really tried to impart gourmet flavor into a frozen dinner. While it didn't win on looks, it tasted much better than we thought it would. The $6.50 price, however, was too expensive for us.
