Review of the NP Running Short by New Balance

Gear Review: NP Short by New Balance

I like to keep my legs covered and often chose capris over shorts for my runs. But running in Texas, even in early April, called for shorts. While attending the New Balance Women's Running Summit in Austin I scored a pair of the NP shorts ($25). While I won't be going all shorts all the time, the NP shorts are my new go-to bottoms for hot weather, should it strike in Nor Cal anytime soon. Plus, I have started to keep a pair in my gym bag just in case I have an unexpected chance to hit the treadmill during work — gyms can feel so stuffy.

The NP short sits comfortably low on the hips with a easy-to-tie drawstring and has a key pocket on the front right side. The shorts have a lightweight liner and mesh side side panels; both are great for those long, hot, sweaty runs. The coolest feature to me is the small back pocket with a velcro closure for my iPod that has an exit hole for my headphone wires. The inseam is three inches, which for this capri-lover is as short as I can go. Best of all the NP short doesn't poof out in the crotch area when you're walking around like some other shorts I have seen (maybe this is another reason I am not so into shorts), but the fabric drapes nicely when you're on the move. These shorts come in many colors from a bold fuchsia to subtle gray.

I've never considered the pros and cons of running shorts before, probably because it gets so hot in the summer where I live that people have no other option but to wear them! I love my lululemon running shorts, and the Nike Tempo shorts are cheaper but still very flattering.

I wish all my running shorts had a key pocket. Such a great feature.

I generally don't wear running shorts because I fell butch-y in them. But maybe that's because I haven't tried a decent pair on that doesn't "poof out in the crotch area." LOL... funny, but true.
