Speak Up: How Many Calories Do You Consume in a Day?

With so many people trying to lose weight, counting calories seems to be on everybody's mind. Some people keep food journals or measure out their portions to monitor their calorie intake. Others follow a dietitian's strict food plan, and some people just guesstimate the amount of calories they eat in daily. If you're trying to lose weight, you should never really dip below 1,200 calories in day, and most women need between 1,200 and 2000 calories a day. It depends on how active you are and how much you currently weigh. So I was wondering, how many calories do you consume in a day? Is it something you keep track of or do you eat what you want and not worry about calories?

I probably have 1,600 calories a day. I'm trying not to focus on counting calories, but intuitively eating and eating whole, nutritious foods.

You are all so lucky, I have to stick to 1000 calories, and i'm six foot. Yes I do a lot of excersise, I do swimming, running, cross-country, horse-riding, fencing, trampolining and I go to the gym twice a week. Something is seriously going wrong in my life, since i am like a szie 14! Any suggestion to how i can loose weight, please help me im desperate to loose like 3 stone.

i know that it's not good but i usually have less than 1000 a day and i work out a lot. i figure that if i'm able to limit the cals and manage to burn a lot then i'll lose weight faster.

I easily, EASILY clear 2,500/day - I'm much more hedonistic than I'd like to admit. I admire y'alls willpower, seriously.

I think it's good to have some general knowledge how many calories there are in the food we eat, but to count everyday must be extremely time consuming and stressful. Cutting out or consuming in moderation when it comes to junk/fatty food is probably more wise.

I don't count my calories! I just make sure to exercise and do the simple things like drink diet coke if I want pop, or eat whole grain carbs. Everything in moderation, eh?

katy, consider increasing the intensity of your exercise and adding strength training. with this change you'll probably need to eat more.

as a recovering bulimic and anorexic i don't keep track at all. I don't weigh myself but I'm a size 4. I work out a half hour 5-6 days a week. I used to be obsessed with it.

I'm a guesser, sometimes you don't want to know how many calories yoru consuming . . but if I do eat pre-packed food I always cheeck the calorie content. I think counting calorie is more important if you eat a lot of packaged, pre-made food compared to home cooked cos you know what is going into home-cooked food. And I'm big on home cooking.

I don't count, but I read the food labels and try to be aware of how much I'm eating. I work out in the morning and take mini breaks during the work day to stretch and take walks. I recently found out I'm sensitive to gluten, so I don't eat bread or wheat pasta anymore. I eat brown rice as a subsitute, and definitely no candy or chips as they all have gluten in them. So for the most part, that plus the exercise has helped me lose weight.

humm well, since I need to gain weight my doctor told me to eat about 1800(I'm 5'2, 102 lbs) ...so I guess that I used to eat less than that... I eat everything but I didn't used to be as healthy as I am now, you know, college...before my lunch was Mcdonalds in the afternoon and a sandwich at night.

Average for me is probably somewhere between 1200 to 1400. Not for weight-loss reasons, just because I'm really little and don't really seem to need more than that. I do end up having a go-out-to-eat-and-have-a-blowout feast about once every couple of weeks or so, though.

I eat 1200 calories a day because I'm trying to lose some weight and am only 5 2. Even though everyone says 1200 is the minimum, I think its ok because I'm sure I'm not measuring the calories correctly on everything I eat. I feel like its so hard to get the exact serving size for like a bowl of pasta or something! Although I count 1200 I'm probably eating more around 1300. And I just read an article where they say you can't always trust the nutrition info that restaurants provide so now I'm really unsure of my calorie intake!

I'm short, about 5'3 and pretty small framed and I try to stay between 1300 and 1700 calories, depending on exercise or not.

I try to keep track of my intake. (I love FitDay's website, although the new version doesn't cooperate with my phone, which sucks.) It's tough for me b/c I've struggled with eating disorders. I'm always worried about getting too obsessive, but if I'm not keeping track & being mindful, I seem to resort to more extreme behaviors. I'll avoid eating b/c I'm "busy", which eventually leads to binging, which makes me feel worse than anything. So, I make sure I eat at least 1200 calories a day even if I have to force myself, although I usually consume more like 1500 to 2000, but sometimes I throw reason to the wind and probably consume several thousand. Whew.

I'm 5'2", 110lbs and how much calories i eat depends a lot. Sometimes, i eat only 1200, and sometimes, i go up to 2500. Most of the time, i don't go over 2000, but because i'm very active (i dance 5 days a week + jogging + a lot of walking), i sometimes need to eat more. And on the weekend, i tend to let myself go a little bit more. I'm a sugar addict and 80% of my calories come from carbs, but i feel great this way.

Katy Harper...we're kind of in the same boat...I started losing weight 4 months ago at 5'7" and 180 pounds. Now I'm also at 154! The weight is coming off sooo slowly now...sometimes I lose a pound or two a week, sometimes I gain. And I eat one cheat meal a week, but sometimes when I eat it, the next day I'm up to 3 pounds heavier. I know I didn't eat enough to gain 3 pounds, but it still takes me like 4 or 5 days to get back to the weight I was at. Frustrating...

Katy, sometimes you do have to eat more to lose more. Your metabolism is like a fire and needs fire wood (or food) to keep burning. Otherwise it just burns out and you end up not losing cause your body goes into starvation mode and hangs onto EVERY LITTLE CALORIE. Make sense?

katyharper, everone is different and everyone's metabolism is different, but that definitely isn't enough caloric intake for the workout you had. Your body will go into shut-down mode and your metabolism will slow down significantly. Our bodies are smart and if it thinks that it's starving, it will hold onto whatever it has left!

Oh gosh.... OK reading all of your comments has really gotten me to think. I've kept a food journal on and off for a few years, but a couple months ago I bought a program on my iPhone called iShape, and it's a food/exercise journal, which is handy, because it's always with you. I'm 5'7", and when I started really using it, I weighed 160 lbs. It said that for me to lose 2 lbs/week, I should eat 1333 cals/day. BUT, I've always been obsessive about what I eat and how much i work out. And to tell the honest truth, yesterday morning I went to spinning for 45 mins and then ran on the treadmill for 30 mins, which burned approx 850 calories. Over the course of the day, I ate 1637 cals, for a net of around 750 cals. I should mention that at my job, I basically sit completely still ALL DAY. I was losing about 2 lbs/week, and am now down to about 154 lbs. But I've plateaued. I guess I'm not eating enough? If anyone wants to talk about this, I would really appreciate it. target= 1600, but i tend to fall a bit short, and end up in the 1400-1500 range. keeping an online food journal has really helped me get a reality check for food intake & calories, but even more than that, my raised consciousness about what i eat allows me to balance my diet more. i always thought i ate well (although my portions were wonkers)...now i can look at this daily log and KNOW if i'm eating enough fruits and veggies, for example.
