A Trainer Gets Brutally Honest About Why You Aren't Seeing Results

Speak Up: What Fitness Equipment Intimidates You at the Gym?

Many of you are avid gym goers, not only because the weather outside may not allow you to exercise outdoors, but because it's a convenient and easy way to get in a good workout. There are so many different types of machines and equipment you wouldn't be able to have access to if you worked out solely at home. I'm wondering if there is any type of gym equipment you shy away from because it intimidates you. Personally barbells intimidate me, not because I don't know how to use these types of weights, but because all the sweaty muscle men hang out near them. What about you?

the rowing machines and the stair master scare me. I've been on the stair master twice, almost eaten it both times, and am dying after just a few minutes on the stair master ):

Treadmill. Well, maybe I'm not scared so much as I loathe it. But I'm happy to report I'm weening off the elliptical and hit the treadmill this morning. It wasn't fun- but I know I need some variety so I don't plateau!

I agree completely plumeria9. I am often the only girl within 30 feet of the free weights or squat rack but what is funny is that the men who park it in that area often don't know what they are doing anyway! I see men lifting with horrible form and with weights that are way too heavy. Men just seem to have the confidence and/or ignorance to not care. Everyone looks dumb at some point at the gym if they are challenging themselves and trying new things. If you want to try a certain lift or exercise look it up on google, they have video of just about everything you can think of. That way you can learn the right form and for certain exercises you can practice a little on your form at home so you feel more confident busting it out in front of people at the gym.

I normally stay away from the free weights unless I'm in class. I'm sure all the big sweaty men exercising in that area are nice, but I never work out over there so I don't know the protocol and I'd rather stick to my machines for now.

I can't do a pull up, and I don't have the guts to pull out that little hanging strap thing in public. :)

Nothing really. I am with those who said it's aggravating getting scared at by sweaty mean when using free weights, but it's easy to ignore them.

Come on girls! Don't let the men take over the entire weight room. Most guys are not there for the entertainment. I work out in a pretty large weight room. If there is a piece of equipment that I am interested in using, I will watch people use it and see how they do it, then I try it and see if it's for me. I try to use one new piece of equipment a week so I don't get stuck in a rut. Go girls go!

Ditto AZDaisy! I also used to be afraid of the stairstepper and ellipticals (of all things!) because I have really bad balance, but one day the treadmill was being used, and I got on the stairstepper and realized I love it! Now I can do it without putting my hands on the machine for support! :-)

The pull up and chin up bars! I would never attempt to use those!

the treadmill. oh my gosh, i have nightmares about the treadmill. i know you're not supposed to be ashamed to move at your own pace, but i feel like such a loser when i'm panting, wheezing, and clinging onto the machine by my fingertips when the women around me are running like gazelles. i stick to the elliptical.

I'm not intimidated by anything... because my trainer helped me become strong and smart about it all! Seriously, if you feel intimidated, work with a trainer a few times and ask a ton of questions.. then you will be completely confident on your own!

The free weights. Not because they scare me in and of themselves, but because of the sweaty, grunting mass of testosterone that stares when you pick one up.

I used to be afraid of the free weights and cable machines because of the big sweaty men, but the last 2 gyms I've been to have 2 separate free weight areas. One with all the weights - small through huge - and then another with just smaller weights (meant for women). It's made me so much more comfortable using them! But some of the machines freak me out - I feel like a loser trying to figure them out.
