Special K Commercial: Ridiculous or Harmless?

A Special K commercial was recently brought to my attention. Many folks are upset by the woman in the ad contemplating skipping breakfast to lose a few pounds, and she is clearly not overweight. Take a look and you be the judge.

I do agree that skipping breakfast is not the answer to weight loss, but neither is showing a healthy, beautiful woman as the image of someone who needs to lose weight. To me, they have a good message, it just comes across the wrong way in this commercial. What do you think?

Special K always has thin women in their commercials. I always have to roll my eyes, but not because they're thin- because that "Special K" breakfast would never fill me up. I'd be looking for a snack in an hour.

I'd have to agree with some of the women here, that honestly, most women who not overweight, or are of "average" weight for their height are looking to lose weight or are tempted to lose weight in unhealthy ways. Since this woman isn't a size 0, I'm not offended by it. Their message to eat breakfast is what counts, and so I think the commercial is fine.

I like the fact that they point out that it's better to eat breakfast than skip it. And it deosnt matter if she's overweight or not, it helps to eat the right number of meals.

When I first saw the commercial, I thought the same, but I just assumed it was my own jealousy. Interesting how people thought the same.

I don't think she needs to lose wait at all. But whatever it's just a commercial.

i actually went to school with the girl in the commercial, and yeah, she definitely doesn't need to lose any weight. but, it's a commercial, so i didn't think it was a big deal until now. actually, i don't really see why it's a big deal. it's a television ad.

yeah, that's what i thought javsmav! most people would be excited that their bosom was button-busting, i would think... also, the visual of a button-busting is just silly in this case, the clothes were not nearly tight enough for a button to FLY off, regardless of size.

To honest, if I had seen this commercial before seeing that people were making a big deal about it, I wouldn't have thought anything of it. To me it's just another commercial. She's not exactly that thin though that I really think it's something to make a big stink over, not to say that she's big either.

wait, isn't the button popping off from around her chest? she wants to skip breakfast for smaller breasts? I actually think that's pretty funny.

I just saw the remake of this commercial. They now just show the word "skipping" then "breakfast" then show the cereal while using pretty much the same script. I guess enough people didn't like it!

I do remember seeing this commercial and thinking "uuumm she's not fat anyway??"

It's kind of stupid, but then again, I don't want to see a fat person eating the cereal. Special K is nasty anyway.

I agree with Sundaygreen - women of all sizes are occasionally saying that they need to lose a few, so the commercial's actually pretty accurate if you think about it that way. When I first saw this on TV, I didn't actually think about the woman's weight at all; the only thing that got through was the "eat breakfast" message.

all commercial of this kind are like that. the first commercial with REAL women i have ever seen was Dove when they started using normal women.

She's not model thin so I don't think it's such a big deal, and to be honest I think a lot of women who look like her always want to 'lose a few pounds'. I'm not saying it's right (or that they need to), I just think that if my shirt was feeling too tight or the button on my jeans popped, I'd also want to watch what I eat and probably up my exercise. I wouldn't want to eat Special K anyway, yuk. Give me some eggs and fruit for breakfast, thanks.
