Healthy Snacks That Won't Let You Down

If you're a vegan and need some snack ideas, FitSugar reader Crystalinsf has you covered.

Being a vegan I'm always searching for "normal" snacks I can enjoy with the rest of the world and by normal, I mean snacks that are naturally, born vegan. Organic pretzels, a bowl of mixed fruit (this pic features pineapple and nectarines), and my special vegan popcorn are the perfect healthy snack we can all enjoy.  You get something sweet, something juicy, and definitely something salty. My special popcorn is a favorite everywhere I go and a great healthy alternative to the calorie filled buttered popcorn you buy at the stores. I buy Newman’s Own or Whole Foods Brand unbuttered, unsalted popcorn (360 calories versus 2000 calories). Once popped, I simply drizzle extra virgin olive oil over the warm popcorn and add a bit of sea salt. Seriously, ammmazing! All my non-vegan friends can vouch for this unbelievably tasty snack.

P.S. My mom always told me the trick to popping tasty popcorn, is to take the bag out of the microwave once the popping slows down — never put it in for the full time. And all microwaves are different, so keep your peepers open.

Have you tried it yet? What do you think?

Stacy's Multi-grain Pita chips with Sabra Pine Nut hummus is one of my favorite snacks. I recently discovered Tostitos Multi-Grain chips, they're REALLY good when they're fresh. I like them with homemade refried black beans (made with oil, roasted garlic, salt, chili powder, cumin, and onion) or Mango Peach Salsa. Mmmmmmmm.

I was vegan for 6 months, it was an amazing 6 months. I had more stamina, I could run faster and longer and I was generally happier. I ate a lot of vegan popcorn, pretzels and fruit, but my favorite Vegan snacks was homemade pita chips. Just separate the pita length wise, cut it into triangles, drizzle with olive oil, cover with some garlic, salt, pepper and cumin and pop it into the toaster oven on medium (or the oven on 350 until crisp).
