Wash Clementines Before Eating Them

Health Tip: Wash Clementines Before Eating Them

Clementines are one of my favorite citrus fruits because they're easy to peel, and they're sweet like tangerines but don't contain any seeds. Also, one clementine is only 35 calories and contains almost 1.5 grams of fiber. I love that you can buy them in cases, but one thing you need to remember is to wash them before you peel them. Even though you don't eat the peel, when you peel your clementine, germs and pesticides can transfer onto your hands. So when you eat fruit inside, you can end up ingesting bacteria and chemicals. So wash this orange fruit before enjoying it. Actually, this is a great tip for all fruit you're going to peel, including bananas, mangoes, and kiwi.

Interesting - I generally don't wash things that I peel.

Seriously? God forbid we should ever come into contact with CHEMICALS or GERMS! Why not just live in a space suit then? (hint: they are everywhere)

hm. never thought about that. on the bananas front, i never touch the part of the banana that i eat. just the peel, so i'll skip that.

Never thought about that... I'll probably be too lazy to wash them first anyway... oh well, good to know!

tls same here. I never washed my clementines or bananas. Just seemed odd to me when I'm peeling it...maybe I will now.

I don't usually wash foods that I'm going to peel, either. Bananas, oranges, things like that. My theory is that very little of the pesticides are going to get on the fruit that I'm going to eat, so why bother? I'm not really a germophobe, either...I've got quite a healthy body flora going on and those good bacteria keep the nasty ones from taking hold.

Yes, definitely. I loooooove clementines!
I eat these by the bucket load. So yummy, tiny & sweet and way more practical than oranges.

I never wash any fruit that you peel. The thing with kiwi fruit, you can eat the skin - which not many people seem to know. I have never been sick by food before, probably because I am not afraid of germs and have a resistance.

I can't abide clemetines. I had one for breakfast not too long ago and the smell in my office of the clementine made me nauseated all day. I can't even be in the presence of them now.

Allytta - I eat them unwashed, and I'm totally aware of the risk. I'm just too lazy to wash a fruit that I'm then going to peel. I only wash them if I'm planning to cut them with the skin intact.

that's a smart tip that most people don't think about. you figure that since you're peeling the fruit that you're safe, but that's not always the case. one of my co-workers used to be OBSESSED with clementines and now i enjoy them as a result. they may be small, but they are a great thirst quencher and if you need something sweet - they are perfect at low calories.
