What Causes Gray Hair?

When I was growing up my mom always told me that I was going to give her a head full of gray hair. Nowadays I tell the same thing to my husband. The real question is how much does stress really play into turning your hair gray? Take this fun quiz to find out the answer and more.

I'm 76 years old and still waiting for gray hair. Ive bleached it for about 58 years. I let it grow out about every 2 years to see if I have more gray but no luck. I have one white spot on the right side next to my widows peak but that's about it. The rest is (my delete key doesn't work)f)medium brown. I WANT GRAY HAIR!

I've got red hair, so mine goes from red to blond to white. I've been grappling with stray white hairs at least since I started college three years ago. The only other person who's ever noticed (or said something about it anyway) a lady who cut my hair a few months ago. But they're always annoyed me so much. If I notice one while standing in the mirror I start obsessing about it, sometimes pulling it out, and sometimes tracking down others (if I look, I always find). I used to pull them out every time, but I started worrying that some wouldn't grow back at all and that I'd regret it in the long-run if I created thin patches. I've been trying to find some sort of home hair color that I can use so spot treat. I feel like it's especially unfortunate because I really like my natural hair color and it's so hard to create with dyes.

I started to go grey at 27, I wish I didn't have to dye my hair it's so expensive to maintain.

I got my first gray strands at 18, and at 28 they're everywhere. Thankfully, they don't come in in big patches yet. I don't mind too much, b/c my natural color is a boring, mousey brown that I was coloring before I ever went gray, and the way I see it, at least there is something I can do to fix it. So many of us have flaws we can't do anything about like scars or any number of physical "flaws" like being really tall/short/fat/thin/pale/dark, etc. Additionally, I have a guy friend who is 29 years old and totally, completely bald, and so thinking about what we're up against as opposed to men makes me ok with it. It does suck to have to keep up with it so often though, and I even dye my hair at home. With my low income, going to the salon every few weeks for a touch up is out of the question, and I don't really have the time either.

I started at 19...thankfully it's been a slow process, but now in my early 30s it's becoming a real pain to deal with :(

I start getting gray from last year :( Fortunately, only 2-3 strands of them. I kid around telling my hubby that both he and our son cause my gray hair!

I'm getting a few more but I don't think it's time for bf does comment on it but I don't think he thinks it is time for me to color either. I think he just likes giving me a bad time...but I should ask him again! It's just so $$ to get your hair colored!!

i'm petrified of going grey - i've never dyed my hair before and i don't really want to get bogged down in that viscious cycle now...i'll be in the salon every couple of weeks spending how much money...too, what do you do? you have to make a decision, at an early age, whether or not to let yourself get grey or to go natural, and that decision will stick with you for your life! do i want to be a 28 year old with salt and pepper hair? NO ... BUT do i want to be a 70 year old with brown hair? NO! help! maybe i should pose this question to bellasugar or something!

I always knew that grey didn't come from stress- my grandma had 8 kids, and still has brown hair at the age of 85, believe it or not!

phew thank god, I already have a few grays due to genetics, glad they will only come from that and not stress too!

My boyfriend is 27 and already has a few gray hairs coming in, but I think it's cute. I think salt and pepper hair is more attractive on men. I never thought Tom Cruise was hot, but he did it for me with his salt and pepper hair in "Collateral"

Not sure if I believe about stress not being a cause - I had some grey hairs in 7th grade, and it was due to stress. (They did go away eventually.)
