What Kind of Gym Do You Belong To?

I'm a huge fan of going to the gym, as I'm sure you're aware. There are so many fitness centers nowadays, it seems you can't walk more than two blocks without seeing a sign for a one. There are chain gyms, privately owned gyms, and family-style gyms, where kids are invited too. So I was wondering . . .

I am a member in a popular sporting club(and for entertainment too, meet up w/friends, movies etc..) where there is a gym too. But I don't go there since I started working :-( Maybe for a swim every once in a blue moon...

I go to Anytime Fitness. I loves it. It's never that busy, so I can always have my elliptical! They also have all the weight machine's I need. AND it's affordable.

Powerhouse Gym... I don't like it much. It's more for men, than women. But, there aren't any Gyms that are closer to my for now it's good enough.

My apt bldg has a pretty adequate gym, so I use that sometimes--there are free yoga classes on sundays, too, which is pretty awesome. I hate treadmills so much, though, that if it's too icy to run outside then I just run the stairs in my bldg instead.

Ballys and I love it! I was at 24hour for like 5 years and finally decided to switch. GREAT decision.

I've been a member of Crunch for nearly five years now. I did a lot of research and testing when I lived in NYC (the company I worked at had discounted rates at most of the big gyms in the city), and they had what I wanted (fun, included classes and more personality than a standard chain). Now I couldn't imagine going anywhere else. I think it depends on what you want to get out of it though. I like to work out in "temperature-controlled" environments so no running in humidity or snow and, if I'm just using weights or machines, I don't have the motivation to go but for classes it's like an exact time to keep consistency in my routine.

Private gym...well it belongs to the military. So I guess it would be private because only people on the base can use it.

Luckily my university lets us use the gym for free (although I HATE how there are only 2 ellipticals and it's very cramped) but at home I go to a privately owned gym. It's a more laid-back atmosphere than the 24-Hour around the block, and they are more willing to give you a price cut than a huge chain.

We have a 'free gym' at my University in Otago, NZ, but it costs us $224 dollars a year payable to the student association who own the gym for 'Health and Recreation'. But I dont really mind, that also includes our heavily subsidised doctors office. Just wish they'd make the weights room a little more girl-friendly- for a while they only set of free weights they had started at 10kgs! (I think thats 30 pounds)

I go to the University of Illinois and we're provided with a free gym membership as part of tuition (hmm no wonder it's the highest among public institutions...) and the gym is SUPER nice. They're building another band new one that should be ready next year too. For the summer when I'm home, I'm getting a membership through my park district, which also has a pretty nice gym

I live in Miami and go to a gym called Fight Club - it is excellent. Everyone minds their own business and the classes are really geared toward self-defence. I take mainly capoeira classes, but they also offer ju-jitsu, Muay Thai, kickboxing and regular boxing in the ring. It a lot of fun b/c most of the exercises you pair up with someone, as opposed to most public gyms where you're on your own even in group classes. Here's the link in case there is anyone here from Miami that would like to check it out.

I belong to a chain and a private one. Oddly enough I enjoy the cheap chain gym more. Its less crowded, more up to date, and cleaner.

I live in NYC so I belong to NYSC. You wouldn't catch me dead in Central Park or running for that matter. I'm too afriad of being murdered or attacked by dogs.

I used to be a member at Equinox, then switched over to 24 Hour Fitness, and while I still have my membership, I prefer to do my work outs outdoors. Also, there's a gym in my apartment building that I use.

I belong to a private gym but it has tons of machines and different weight rooms and offers all the different kinds of classes you could ask for. And it's super cheap. I love it

I just joined a private gym/muay thai facility! It kick my butt. I still have my memnbership with Bally's and got them to lower my rate!! I dont go to bally's that much unless on a rainy day and its closer to my house. But the private gym is great because everyone knows you and you get a personal trainer all the time :)

We have a fully equipped gym in my apartment complex - I use it everyday. Nice that I have to pay a membership fee - it's just part of my rent!

When I was in school I used to just run outdoors and go to my school's gym (also practiced in the morning for softball). Now, I belong to Bally's and I'm pretty happy there. All the trainers and instructor's are nice and I love the group cardio classes! :)

I go to our campus rec center. Our school is crazy about football and athletics so we have a great rec center - and the athletes get their own gym made just for them, so I don't have to feel to awkward about not knowing what I'm doing sometimes! Plus, it has the only rock wall in our city and that's my new thing - it's a great work out, a good challenge all the time, and it's fun, not "work".
