5 Totally Unexpected Things That Make You Bloat

Feb 5 2018 - 11:20am

While there are obvious causes of belly bloat [1], like sugar, dairy, etc., not every culprit is as suspecting. From healthy foods [2] to emotional triggers, bloating can come out of nowhere and leave you startled, distended, and a little pissed, TBH. Here are some of the more surprising causes for an uncomfortably swollen abdomen.

Fruits and Veggies

Cruciferous veggies (like kale, cabbage, brussels sprouts, and cauliflower), apples, and pears [4] all are very healthy and nutrient dense, but can all cause bloating for different reasons. If you're a frequent kale consumer or have been eating a lot of apples lately (and you also happen to be bloated), try removing them from your diet temporarily to see if you feel any relief [5].

Beans

They're the magical fruit [7] — and they make you toot (don't shoot the messenger, we didn't make the rules or the lyrics here). While they're a wonderful source of plant-based protein, beans can create gas in your digestive tract, causing bloating. Try some gentle yoga twists [8] to let it all out.

Chewing Gum

Chewing gum [10] constantly can lead to swallowed air. And you know where that air is going, right?

Sparkling or Carbonated Beverages

We love La Croix as much as the next person, but all that carbonation has to go somewhere . . . and that somewhere is your gut [11]. Sorry to be the bearer of bad bloated news.

Stress

Not all bloating is caused by something you ingested [13]. Stress can trigger digestive upset [14] and bloating, so if you've been feeling particularly frazzled lately, try some stress-relief treatments [15] to ease your mind and your belly.
