Karen Chen, an 18-year-old figure skater from Fremont, CA, has been skating since she was 4. Now, she is taking the ice with Team USA's figure skating team in Pyeongchang, South Korea. So what should you know about the first-time Olympian? We found seven fun facts.

She's a Published Author

Not only can she skate, but she can also string words together. A lot of words. Chen is the author of Finding The Edge: My Life On Ice, a book about her quest to become a champion figure skater.

She Has a Good Luck Charm

Chen wears a jade rabbit around her neck both on and off the ice. The necklace, her zodiac sign, was a gift from her mother.

She Has a Famous Friend

Chen has worked with famed figure skater Kristi Yamaguchi. "Kristi has been my source of inspiration and role model," she said about the skater on her Instagram. The duo met when Chen was 12.

She Qualified . . . While She Was Sick

Chen came down with the flu the week of the qualifying events. But she rallied and took the third spot on Team USA along with Bradie Tennell and Mirai Nagasu.

She's Not the Only Skater in the Family

Chen's younger brother, Jeffrey, is also a figure skater. The duo skated together in the past and have won multiple competitions.

She Holds a Record

Chen's short program score at Nationals in 2017 was the highest ever recorded in ladies' figure skating at the US Championships.

She Knows Multiple Languages

According to NBC's Team USA profile, Chen can fluently speak Mandarin Chinese and can also understand Taiwanese.
