Why Naked Yoga?

Honoring your body is an aspect of practicing yoga, and it's a powerful thing to connect your breath with your body's movements. Once you're in the groove, you feel strong, alive, and content. Some yoga devotees take this to a whole new level by practicing their asana completely free of clothes.

To find out why folks prefer to practice yoga in the buff,

Practitioners of naked yoga explain the lack of clothes frees them from negative feelings about their bodies and allows them to be more accepting of their physical imperfections, like stretch marks, love handles, or cellulite. Others are nudists to begin with and feel more natural in their birthday suit, so practicing naked yoga seems more natural. Whatever the reason to strip and stretch, teachers and practitioners of naked yoga feel it's a way to find a deeper connection with yourself and the world around you. Plus, if you're naked, you don't have to worry about your gals falling out of your top in Down Dog, or wedgies from your underwear. Many classes are geared solely toward men or women, but co-ed classes are also offered. I like my yoga clothed, but to each her own.

Does this sound like something you'd want to try?

I'm attracted to my teacher. So guess what happened when we tried nude yoga at our club. Nothing. No big deal at all.

I am far to shy to practice naked with other people (but would totally love to watch in a completely curious friendly voyeuristic way, all those bodies moving beautifully in and out of poses) I love doing yoga naked at home. It is an interesting and personal way to get to know your body at any age. The first time I did it, I was giggling to myself at my most intimate places, and soft rolls. It was great. I absolutely suggest it to anyone, at least to try at home.

yoga in the nude is fun.

Looks like I am also in the minority with Stacey Cakes. I think naked yoga would be really interesting to try. Considering that everyone around you is also nude, there's really nothing to be self conscious about.

I guess I would try it I'm just worried I might get turned on

Yeah, I'm with the other posters about the sports bra thing...there's a reason you have to wear them when you work out! I would be way too self-conscious to get naked in front of anyone besides my husband, so I'll have to pass on the naked yoga.

Erm. I really wouldn't want to be behind a naked person doing Downward Facing Dog. And personal hygiene at the gym seems to be a bit questionable for some people anyway - naked yoga - especially HOT naked yoga seems like a bad idea all round. Also I agree with GlowingMoon about the necessity of sports bras! I had a breast reduction last year, but if I'd tried to bend into a yoga pose bra-less before the surgery, I would probably have given myself a black eye!

No, thank you. I wear a sports bra for a reason. I need the support (and coverage). I am well-endowed. Exercising (even low-impact) without a sports bra would be painful and awkward for me.

I guess I'm definitely in the minority here but I think it might be fun to try once. After years of practicing bikram yoga, in barely there tops and short-shorts, I guess I have just become super comfortable with my body (including its flaws). I think I might be able to focus on my postures and breathing better, if I didn't have to worry about fixing a fallen sports-bra strap or pulling down shorts that rode up.

great for at home, but in a class, surronded by people on all sides - that's nasty!

I feel uncomfortable and awkward in Bikram Yoga which is minimal clothing as it is, so I think I'd absolutely crawl out of my skin in naked yoga.

No thank you. Not only do I not want people to see me that close up, but I don't want to see them either!

I could maybe do this at home with a dvd, although I'd still find myself feeling self conscious even with nobody there to see me. Definitely could not do this in a class. It's all cute in child's pose, but wait until people start bending into halasana. I don't need people seeing my butt crack spread open!

Ummm...I don't think so. I know the whole point is to be comfortable enough in my own skin, whatever, but I wouldn't be able to do some of those poses without thinking of what the person behind me could potentially see :-P
