Team USA's 17-year-old Lydia Jacoby [1] went from training in a 25-yard pool in Seward, Alaska, to winning her first Olympic [2] gold medal in the women's 100m breaststroke [3]. Up until the final seconds of the race, announcers were convinced South Africa's Tatjana Schoenmaker [4] was going to take the gold medal. However, in the last lap, Jacoby — who happens to be a Pisces [5] — powered past Schoenmaker to clinch the gold medal.
In a post-race interview with Lilly King [6], who is a fellow Team USA member and the bronze medalist of the evening, King expressed that she was glad to see her gold-medal legacy in the women's 100m breaststroke go to Jacoby. Ahead are moments during and after Jacoby's first Olympic gold.
