I started sleeping with an eye mask when my husband bought one for me as a surprise to help me sleep better when my quality of sleep went down the tubes at the beginning of the pandemic, over a year ago. It was such a game changer that I've been sleeping with one ever since!

So when I was sent a Manta Weighted Sleep Mask to try, it looked so unique, I couldn't wait until I could test it out. I loved the idea of it being weighted but also that it could black out 100 percent of the light — can it really?! Keep reading to see photos of this eye mask and to find out if it was that much better than the eye mask my husband got me.

Manta Weighted Mask: Eye Cups

What makes the Manta Weighted Mask so unique are these super-soft and cushiony eye cups. Instead of gentle pressure on your closed eyeball, there is gentle pressure around your eye. This allows for you to open your eyes (which is admittedly an odd feeling at first, since it's still dark when you open them).

I appreciated that my eyelashes didn't get caught caught or feel squished.

Manta Weighted Mask: 100 Percent Blackout

Since your eyes are completely covered by these cushiony cups, 100 percent of light is blocked. Usually, the subtlest light will keep me awake, but whether light was coming through the window or my husband was reading with a nightlight, I was able to feel like I was in a cozy, dark cave.

The deep darkness this eye mask creates is great for inducing the calmness I need to fall asleep. It was amazing!

The eye cups stay put with velcro so they're easily adjustable to give you your perfect fit. The cups can also be removed if you prefer gentle pressure on your closed eyelids and just want to use the weighted eye mask alone. The interior fabric is soft and cozy like the cups. This is a great option if you sleep on your side or belly. It still blocks most of the light as long as you make sure it's snug against the bridge of your nose.

You can also purchase the strap and the eye cups separately — Weighted Head Strap ($30) and Eye Cups ($20) — if you need an extra of either one. There are also different types of eye cups available such as Silk Eye Cups ($30) or Cool Eye Cups ($25), so you can mix and match what you prefer. If you want to swap out the strap, there's also a lavender-scented Aroma Head Strap ($30), so there are a lot of options.

The head strap is easily adjustable for the perfect snug fit with a thin hook-and-loop fastener. Once I secured the velcro around my head, it stayed put even when I turned over while sleeping.

What's It Like Sleeping With a Manta Weighted Mask?

What's It Like Sleeping With a Manta Weighted Mask?

Sleeping with the Manta Weighted Mask definitely took some getting used to. It's thicker than other eye masks I've worn, which wouldn't be an issue for back sleepers. But as a belly or side sleeper, I had to make sure to snugly secure the strap against my face, so if I rolled over or rubbed my face against my pillow, it wouldn't slide off. The gentle, cushiony pressure around my eyes felt so calming.

The fact that not one tiny ray of light was visible helped me fall asleep fast and stay asleep throughout the night. I'd 100 percent recommend this eye mask for those who need complete darkness to sleep — it'd be great for traveling!
