The US women's team is considered one of the most physically fit, which is helpful for dominating play in matches that run into overtime. Training for the Olympics is more than just perfecting your shot. Team USA takes a very scientific approach to prepping for all their tournaments.
Alex explained that the US women's conditioning plans are based on individual players' fitness levels and their positions. "We did a lot of fitness tests — we did a fitness test for endurance, for agility; we had to do a treadmill test that tested our lactic acid — one that compared when our lungs gave out compared to when our legs gave out. And we wear heart rate monitors every practice and game."
