In many places this time of year, morning hikes require a down jacket and a hat — and that'll be true for at least another month or two. So if you regularly get active outdoors it's worth investing in a quality jacket that's thick enough to stave off the chill but breathable enough to avoid trapping sweat, and durable enough to keep up with you during your activity of choice. It's a trickier balance than it might seem, but we narrowed the search down to 11 pieces of winter workout outerwear, all of which are proven to excel at the outdoor exercise game (or just at getting you to and from the gym).

Whether you want a light puffer jacket, a warm vest, a cozy fleece that's good for layering or lounging, or a weather-resistant hero that will keep you bone dry in wet conditions, these are the pieces that are going to get you through the winter. Some are colorful, some are basic black, but they're all going to keep you warm without hampering your workout. We're particularly sweet on pieces you can easily pack in a suitcase, because some of our favorite winter athletic activities require us to travel, like skiing or snowboarding. Keep reading to shop our picks.
