The Fallout Examines Trauma in the Wake of a School Shooting — Watch the Trailer

The Fallout explores the aftermath of a school shooting, especially the emotional trauma that many survivors feel in its wake. Starring Jenna Ortega (Vada), Maddie Ziegler (Mia), and Niles Fitch (Quinton) and directed by Megan Park, the film is also a coming-of-age story. In the trailer above, you'll see glimpses of struggles Vada specifically faces after the shooting, seeking solace in Mia and Quinton, as well as her therapist.

In 2021 alone, there were at minimum 187 incidents of gunfire on school grounds, according to Everytown [1]. Everytown was one of the organizations Park spoke with to prepare for her directorial role in The Fallout.

"I didn't want to make it a true-life story or specific to one person, but I wanted to make sure that it did track emotionally," Park tells POPSUGAR in a previous interview [2]. "They were really great in providing me resources and to connect me with certain people to make sure that it wasn't triggering and it did track. I wanted to make sure that it was true to that because I hadn't been through it."

The Fallout, which won the grand jury award for best narrative feature at SXSW 2021 [3], streams Jan. 27 on HBO Max.
