The Outfit Hack I Use to Stop Myself From Skipping a Workout

Mar 26 2020 - 5:50am

I'm always happy that I worked out as soon as those mid-exercise endorphins start flowing, but motivating myself to actually work out has always been my challenge. That's why I tend to prefer guided workout classes — the presence of an instructor keeps me from giving up halfway through.

Now that I'm working from home and workout at home full-time, finding my fitness motivation is more challenging than ever. Thankfully, I've realized one simple way to trick myself into exercising, no matter how much I'd like to flop on the couch: Wearing activewear all day.

I learned early on that morning workouts just aren't my thing, so I plan my fitness time for the early evening instead. Even when my sweats are calling my name, I get dressed for the day in a sports bra [1] ($45), loose tank [2] ($45), and stretchy leggings [3] ($75). That way, I'm ready to start my at-home workout as soon as I'm done with all the conference calls, email chains, and video meetings that make up my workday.

This trick works for the same reason that dressing for the job you want makes you feel more confident in your career: if you're already wearing a sports bra, there's no question that you're going to get in a good workout. I've tried this outfit hack a few times already, and it has never let me down. After all, the only thing you really need to exercise is the motivation to do it — everything else is optional.
