1 Woman Had "No Business" Wearing This Dress — but Rocked It Anyway

For as long as Katey Johnson can remember, she's always struggled with her weight. The mom of two recently turned 40, and after her birthday, she decided to pull out a dress that she'd normally completely avoid despite always wanting to wear it.

"Even thought I knew that I could look better in the dress, I didn't care. When I tried it on, I loved it. It felt great, I was going to wear it, and that was that," Katey told POPSUGAR. "I feel like if I could get over my own insecurities and wear the dress, anyone can. It was an amazing feeling."

Katey decided to take her empowering experience to the next level by sharing a photo of herself in the dress on social media — after an internal struggle. "It's one thing to wear the dress, but it's another thing to put it out there for the world to judge," she said. "Ultimately, I think everyone struggles with body positivity and regardless of sex or age, people are vulnerable to the way others perceive them."

Katey explained that she was almost two glasses of Prosecco deep during a girls' weekend with her best friend when she decided to take the quick photo of herself in her little black dress. "Someone could say that I look a little pregnant in it, because of, you know, that part sticking out in the front. I do look a little pregnant. That's fine," she wrote. "Once upon a time I grew two babies in that part sticking out in the front, but I assure you, now it's just where I keep my cheeseburgers and Sauvignon Blanc."

Katey also revealed that she's the heaviest she's ever been except for during pregnancy. "Another truth is that I've always struggled with my weight and if you've ever struggled with your weight, you know it's not a physical struggle. It's about how you see yourself and how you speak to yourself in your mind," she wrote. "After 40 years of telling myself I have no business wearing things I want to wear, I've decided to change the subject. I've decided to start being kind to myself."

Katey clarifies for anyone who might misunderstand her message that she isn't giving up on trying to be healthy — she's just taking a break from constantly beating herself up about it:

"I'm muting the negative things I say to myself, because as it turns out, I care way more about my own comments than anyone else's.

So here's the thing. If I can put on a dress I have no business wearing to go out with my husband or to go to a fancy dinner at a nice restaurant with my best friend because it makes me feel good, you can too. And if I'm putting this picture on my Facebook page for 15,000 people to see, well then you can certainly wear a dress you have no business wearing to a BBQ this weekend. If the hard part is talking yourself into it, tell yourself life's too short to worry about things you have no business wearing."
