Amazon's New Grocery Line Will Give Trader Joe's a Run For Its Money

May 29 2015 - 11:55am

If you love the benefits of online shopping (never leaving your couch), you'll be excited about Amazon's latest food news. The online retailer announced its plan to sell its own brand of groceries including coffee, soup, pasta, water, vitamins, dog food, and household items — basically life's essentials — The Wall Street Journal reports [1]. This means there's almost nothing Amazon won't carry, and the groceries under the company's privately owned label, Elements [2], will be cheaper than name-brand products. Think Target's Market Pantry label and Trader Joe's branded products [3], the cheaper and just-as-good foods we usually reach for. The Wall Street Journal even notes that [4] "private labels made up about a third of Target's $73 billion in sales last year," a sign that the grocery line is a smart move for Amazon — almost smarter than the genius Amazon Dash Button [5]. It's not clear yet if the groceries will be available to everyone or just Amazon Prime members, but it is clear that the idea of buying cheap pasta from your bed is something to be excited about.
