Avocado Masher: Love It or Hate It?

I'm a huge fan of guacamole and prefer to make a fresh version rather than purchase it at the store. As often as I make guacamole, I don't know if I need an avocado masher. It's definitely a unique gadget — created by Mexican cooking guru Rick Bayless — but it seems a little nonessential, especially in my compact studio kitchen. A potato masher or a fork squishes avocados just as simply and easily. What are your thoughts on the unitasker?

I use a pastry cutter to make my guacamole! It works perfectly and keeps the avocado in chunks! (Alton would hate this!)

Potato masher. It's the only way.

Rick Bayless is all about authentic Mexican cuisine, so perhaps there is a reason behind the shape? I probably wouldn't buy it.

Unneccesary, a potato masher would work just as well.

i wouldnt say I HATE it, but it is seriously a waste..looks harder to clean then just a reg fork too

I love Rick Bayless as a chef, but I think he missed the mark on this one. I agree with everyone else too...unnecessary when you've got a fork or potato masher.

It looks hard to clean and it's a unitasker, which I hate. I would just rather use a fork to mash my avocadoes.

gotta go with everyone else on this one, and my mom (therefore I) always used her hands to mix/mash the guac anyway.

Ugh. Hate it. This reminds me of the frittata pan I saw in the Williams Sonoma catalog. I literally shouted at the page, "Everyone has a frittata pan! A frittata is an open faced omelet! I have six 'frittata' pans!!" Spoons and forks work great. If you're feeling particularly angry, as I was that day, use your fists.

Seeing as how I hate! But I also have to agree with the one trick pony comment. Who has room in their kitchen for things that have just one use? I live in Manhattan, so forget that!

I would rather use a fork or a spoon that I can continue to use later to mix in other ingredients that way I have one less thing to wash

i think that it's ok. i guess if you don't want to drag out that hard to find does the trick.

A fork works just as good and is probably easier to clean.

Agree with others that I don't hate it, but nor would I use it.

Looks like it would get used once then stuck in the back of the drawer never to be seen again...

a) it looks bulky and hard to store b) it's a unitasker - which I'm against. c) I love love love avocados, and prefer to have large chunks, not a gross mush, in my guac.

I wouldn't say I hate it, but yeah, seems kind of a waste of space.

I'd never use it...

I like it, but I agree that there's no room in the kitchen for another gadget.

Not only is this a unitasker, but it looks like it would really smush the hell out of your avocados. I like lumpy guacamole, so a potato masher is perfect for me.

I agree, a potato masher is just as good.

Yes, pretty pointless, but I'd use it. I eat avocado all the time.
