Bennigan's and Steak & Ale: Back From the Dead?

Bennigan's and Steak & Ale: Back From the Dead?

Two months ago, we reported the end of restaurant chains Bennigan's and Steak & Ale. Well, we've just learned that they're coming back to life! Private equity firm Atalaya is buying the two brands and their trademarks. It will partner with the Bennigan's franchises still standing to grow business, as well as try to reopen company-owned Bennigan's locations that closed after the bankruptcy.

The Steak & Ale brand closed in its entirety during bankruptcy, but Atalaya intends to leave the option open in the future for franchisees to open independently-operated Steak & Ale restaurants.

According to Atalaya managing director Joel Holsinger, the key to success this time around will be the new menu that's being developed: it will focus on quick pub fare, such as sandwiches, burgers, onion rings, and booze.

While I haven't been to a Bennigan's or Steak & Ale in years, some of you must be excited to hear about your Bennigan's potentially reopening. Do you think the menu overhaul will make the chain profitable again?

There's a Bennigans in Rockville, MD that I was working at when it closed. I had worked the night before only to get a phone call the next day and hear it had been shut down. Everyone I know misses having Bennigans around.. it was a great place to hangout and meet people. I have yet to find another place like Bennigans to hangout and have some good food. If they re-open the Bennigans in Rockville I know a lot of people that'll be happy.

there is a bennigans right down the road from downtown disney here in orlando and it's one of those that was a franchise and remained open. i really like the fact that it's good food, good service and is open late. =)

Benningan's always made everyone I know sick...maybe the one in Boston just had really low standards for keeping things clean?

I hope they re-open the Steak & Ale in my little hometown of Ramsey, NJ. It was part of the history of the town and nostalgia for me. I don't think I ever remember eating there, but I liked that it was around... I'd feel weird if I went back there and didn't see it.

i think i've been to one twice in my life, one by the freeway near me. -shrug- the service wasn't that great and i recall the food wasn't fantastic because i ended up tossing my cookies after. if it reopens, yay, jobs for people, but i don't think i'll be patronizing them and time soon.

The Bennigan's by me always had really good deals that drew me and my fiance in. I liked the food, too, and the service was always great. I hope that when/if it re-opens, we'll have more of the same.

i do think that there's something there - i think that it's more than just a menu overhaul that will be needed to get people back in the doors. there are SO MANY chains out there that are competition and i think that in order to get people back in, they need to rebrand and really make people want to come to the restaurant. when i was younger we used to go to bennigans ALL THE TIME but i think that some of the locations were so 'beat up' that it turned into a place that i wasn't as excited to go to.
