Bento of the Week: Anyone For Starbucks?

Introducing our new feature, bento of the week! Our first find comes from Flickr member Sakurako Kitsa. This bento is absolutely adorable, but be sure to check out her other dazzling creations too. This time her inspiration has come from a Starbucks Green Tea Frappuccino. Love it!

Nice! looking forward to see the next bento of the week! But well I have a stupid question: how do you get to transport your lunch to work without it looking all messy when you arrive?? I ride my bike to work and have seen many nice appealing lunchboxes look really messy when I finally arrive at work... :(

vawilliams, there are a lot of bento stuff on Ebay. Also, the Livejournal Bentolunch Community has a very useful directory of stores and online sites where you can get bento boxes and other bento paraphernalia ( ;)

Well Done! I want to start making these for work, I'm shopping around for an on-sale Mr. Bento and a rice cooker. Amazon seems a little too expensive! Any SUGESTIONS would be MUCH APPRECIATED!

Ahh, genius. But a few years back I read about how there is SO much pressure on Japanese mothers to create these absolutely perfect gourmet, artfully-presented (like carved fruit, pressed wasabi, and arranged ginger, etc) bentos. Apparently whole social hierachies have developed among both the women and children, depending on how elaborate the bento boxes are. If, for example, a mother works and doesn't have whole afternoons to devote to their creation, she can be shunned by the other mothers, and her children can be teased about their plain lunches. This was in a cultural anthropology academic journal, and it went on to discuss how this indicates the role of Japanese women, and mothers, in their society. Pretty interesting.

That is the best bento ever, in my opinion. I love bento! I make some whenever I get the chance.

Adorable! I almost always use a bento box to bring my lunch to work, but it's never as cute as this (I do have a star-shaped onigiri mold, but that's about as creative as my bentos get).

I had no idea what a bento was either. Learn something new everyday!

if you notice, she's actually using a small tupperware container. Some folks compartmentalize theirs with reusable silicone cupcake liners and paper cups. i wish i had the motivation to do the same!

Merymery - I was about to ask the same question. I know it's some sort of lunchbox......

A bento is just a box lunch or meal, and it's usually served in compartmentalized container. Think about the "bento" options in Japanese restaurants - a well rounded compartmentalized meal. There's a big trend right now in really cute and creative bento boxes. As my friend says, "some of those kids have the best moms ever." I hope to find some really great ones for you guys!
