Chipotle [1]'s expanding its "food with integrity" to include beverages, too. According to Westword [2], the company hired Richard Betts, a master sommelier, winemaker, and mescal producer, to create a new line of drinks for one Denver Chipotle location (near the company headquarters).
Betts came up with a new frozen cocktail starring his very own Sombra mescal. The smoky flavor apparently complements a burrito. He's also brought in Eppa Sangria, a certified organic California wine sangria, that will eventually be served out of a keg. And Chipotle will pour Oskar Blues Beerito, a Vienna Mexican lager. Other nonalcoholic drinks include a watermelon aqua fresca, a hibiscus tea using In Pursuit of Tea, and a few new fountain drinks like Coke Life and Blue Sky.
Betts says several factors played into choosing the products for the new line of beverage. First on the list is Chipotle is trying to get away from serving glass bottles at its restaurants (which apparently have a shorter recycling lifespan than cans), opting for organic ingredients, reducing waste, and avoiding products with high-fructose corn syrup. There is no word on a wider release or the prices of the beverages.
