Discover What Vegetables Are in Season During Late Winter

Sadly, Tomatoes Are Not in Season Right Now

A friend of mine was complaining about how she had an awful caprese salad the other day. I felt sad for her food misstep, but I couldn't really feel sorry for her. After all, neither tomatoes nor basil are in season right now.

Yet my friend doesn't seem to be the only one who is setting herself up for food disappointment. I snapped this pic at my local market the other day. Looks like they must be getting a lot of complaints about sad tomatoes, too.

So, if tomatoes are out, what is in? To get a list of some fruits and veggies that are in their prime right now,

.

February is the end of Winter, and March will herald in the beginning of Spring. Right now try cooking with:

  • leeks
  • fennel
  • citrus
  • broccoli
  • chard
  • cauliflower
  • artichoke
  • radishes
  • asparagus
  • strawberries (in some places)
  • mushrooms
  • rhubarb
  • carrots
  • kale

Some of these are just starting up, so keep your eyes peeled!

Do you have a favorite recipe for any of those ingredients? Be sure to share it with us if you do!

I wrote a blog about this because I watched an awful show and read some awful articles about winter tomatoes. People just don't get that in this utopia called America where you can get anything and everything whenever you want it, that doesn't mean that the quality will be good.

This is one of my pet peeves about people while eating out. Thanks for posting this :) We should all eat seasonally and locally!

This is really good to know. I want to start buying produce from local farmers so it's great to know what's in season!

I had braised kale for the first time yesterday. So delicious! I plan on picking up a bunch this weekend to give it a try.

There is nothing better than home grow veggies. Thank goodness the tomatos in my greenhouse are already sprouting. I hate paying $2.99 or more for terrible tomatos in the store.

Sadly, I found out just how NOT good tomatoes are right now, when I tried to make a home made tomato soup for my Boyfriends birthday Monday night. It was NOT good. Boo. I hope I haven't scared him away from my Soup making abilities for the future!!!

People really need to recognize the seasonality of food and not rely on globalization to get an out of season salad. You'll appreciate it more. I live in Miami and in my garden my tomato plants are producing fruit and my basil is going insane but in late summer there won't be squat in my garden.

At work, we use delicious roasted tomatoes until tomato season. Although, I just had dinner at an amazing Italian place here, and their tomatoes were so fresh and amazing and red and JUICY! They must have paid a fortune to get them, and they weren't from Mexico. hah

lol at your local market's sign. thanks for the list of in-season produce. a lot of those make some great soups and it's still chilly enough out to want to come home to some warm liquids. :)

Thanks for the tips. :) We've been lucky here where I live in Michigan. Every time my dad goes shopping he picks up some tomatoes. They've been good.

I'm really happy lately about the quality and price of brococli and asparagus, since they're both favorites. But $2.49 is the best price I'm finding on grape tomatoes, and most of them aren't that good. I'm so sad because I do love my tomatoes.

I grew up in Brentwood and my grandparents were asparagus farmers so I'm quite schooled on what's in season when. Most people now-a-days think everything just comes from the grocery store. I think it's pretty sad how uneducated some are about what they put in their bodies.

I wish more markets would control the quality of their produce like this market. It would definitely save me from grainy tomatoes and dried-up cantalope. It's actually pretty cute that this shop owner took the time to explain his decision not to sell tomatoes. :)
