Do You Call it Skim Milk or Nonfat Milk?

PetSugar and I recently got into a discussion over milk. I grew up knowing that there was whole milk, lowfat milk and nonfat milk. However she grew up calling nonfat milk skim milk. We think it might a coastal thing, but aren't sure. So tell me, what do you call it?

it's called nonfat when it's nonfat. it's called skim when the fat has been 'skimmed' off the top, you see, in the olden days, after you milked a cow, the cream rose to the top, and skimming it off reduced the milkfat of the milk. but didn't remove it completely. nonfat milk removes it completely. so skim, is reserved for the reduced fat milk, 1% and 2% milk. whole milk is called whole. for myself, i refuse to eat anything without the full fat content, fat is way good. it's half and half all the way baby

i always called it non-fat milk and im from California. and i don't really hear milk being called skim. i thought skim milk was another type of milk, like whole milk, 2% milk, nonfat milk. I thought skim had more fat in it...

i have always called and and heard it by skim milk. there was a time where i though non fat milk had even less fat than skim, i pictured it to be a cloudy water. oh and did i mention i was 8 at that time? lol

Skim, both growing up in the North Northwest and now living in the Northeast. Some brands carry two kinds of nonfat/skim, with one having additives to make it taste more like 2% or whole. For those who want to cut calories but like the creaminess of milkfat. I switched to skim in middle school, and now I can't stomach anything else.
