Do You Consider Food Art?

The other day while making skewered vegetables for grilling, my girlfriend and I got into an interesting discussion about food being like art. We were determined to make the skewers look as pretty as possible and carefully thought out each vegetable's placement. Presentation of food is important, but do you consider food art?

I don't play architect when it comes to food, but I do love making something wonderful that looks delicious and serve it at a nice set table, there's nothing sadder than a microwave dinner at the television.

Most definitely! Even as a child when I was cooking I wanted to display it. I rarely cook a recipe that doesn't show me the finish product.

I'm not a very good cook and as a result my presentation skills suck, but I do appreciate a nicely "plated" dish. I wouldn't call it art though.

Food presentation that is "too" pretty causes me to be concerned. It makes me wonder what they are trying to hide. I like it to look appetizing but much fussier than that, unless it's being served at a high-price restaurant (what my dad called "uptown"), not necessary for me. On the other hand, if I'm serving company, I become very fussy about how I present it. That drives my husband up the wall!LOL :)

I don't give it too much thought when it's just my husband and I. If it tastes good, he's a happy man. When company is coming I'm a lot more focused on how things look. I also go out of my way when I take a dish to an event.

I have to admit, I am more of a put-it-on-the-plate-and-amaze-me with-the-taste/experience kind of gal. The more a dish is played with, the more I wonder WHY it has been played with. My most memorable meals, more often than not, have been served on paper plates with great friends and great conversation. No regrets! :)

i love it when i cook up something because the part what i look forward to is to making it look nice! then people think wow! and also sometimes i put some basil on it and it gives a little bit of basil to it.

sometimes, I try to make presentable dishes but I don't really consider it to be art of any kind

The way I cook, food *is* art, regardless of how well it's plated. :P

sometimes - yes. i think that it really depends on what the dish is and how much creativity you can put into it. for myself - i don't usually do anything overly exciting as far as plating goes, so i'm not a food artist, but i can certainly appreciate things :)

I always pay attention to presentation. And I love that photo above. It makes me want to stick a few kabobs on the grill right now :)

"WoW! That looks good enough to eat!" I just had to throw that in.

Well it doesn't hurt to set it up nicely unlike those nachos you posted about. That just looks sloppy and lazily put together.

Yes it can be art, but it is not limited to presentation which is mostly visual, it involves taste, feel, smell and even hear.

Sometimes it's art, sometimes it's just a sandwich.

Expression of ideas. Aesthetically important. Meaningful. I think that would be art and food presentation is definitely a way to create and express oneself.

I think food can look like art. it can almost look too good to eat but the hunger always wins and the food that looks good will always be scarfed down.

I wouldn't call it "art," which I define as the arrangement of tangible aesthetic elements in order to illuminate some intangible truth, but I do appreciate nice food presentation :)

I'm OCD about my skewers looking pretty.

Half the fun of going out to a "fancy" restaurant is the food presentation. I try to make my stuff look as good as possible usually, unless it's just me, then I don't really care what it looks like :P
