Do You Eat Meat in Front of Vegetarian Friends?

The other day I was eating out with a vegetarian girlfriend. While she doesn't mind my consumption of meat, I ordered vegetarian dishes so we could share everything. This wasn't the first time I avoided eating meat while dining with a vegetarian. How about you?

I'm a vegetarian and when my boyfriend and I go out he always eats meat with no problem with it.I do have some issues with it and he knows it but he still eats meat

I am a vegetarian but I don't expect anyone else to adhere to my dietary standards. My boyfriend is a big meat eater and when we go out he gets steak and I get veggies. As long as my dining companion isn't being obnoxious about my choice I am not about theirs.

It depends. If it's a close friend I would because I'm sure they wouldn't mind. If it was a newer friend or I didn't know if they would care I wouldn't do it or I'd ask first. It's really unlikely that there would be a dish I liked that didn't involve meat of some sort. Even the best salads have some meat or seafood.

I am a vegetarian so I obviously don't eat meat, but I certainly don't expect others around me to stop eating meat just because I'm there (although they, in turn, can expect to be teased about it).

If a vegetarian is going to have the gall to crunch on vegetables in my presence then I don't see why I should deprive myself of what I enjoy to eat.

i don't have any militant herbivore friends, so i've never felt pressure not to eat meat in front. i usually don't if i'm out with my two vegan friends & it's just the 3 of us, but that's just because it feels weird to me.

macgirl - beware of us meat eaters and drinkers we are trying to take over the world and rid it of veggies.

Just cause they don't like meat doesn't mean I can't eat it! I would never dictate what someone else could or couldn't eat in front of me and would not appreciate it if someone tried to limit my options!

I will eat meat in front of a vegetarian, in fact my stepsister is a veg and she bothers the crud out of all of us when we eat meat in front of her. She wont even "pass" the turkey at thanksgiving and calls ahead to my mom to make sure there are vegetarian options for her, I told my mom (who already had enough on her plate so to speak) to tell miss demandy-pants to bring her own food if she wanted options. As for going to restaurants that have vegetarian options, if there are 10 meat eaters, and 1 vegetarian, we arent going to cater to that one.

I'm a vegetarian, and my co-workers make a HUGE deal about it! I have told them repeatedly that I don't care what they eat when I'm around, but they always try to order salad (and then complain about how boring it is). They also quiz at meals about the differences between vegan, vegetarian, and whatever term they've made up for people who eat everything but red meat.

Actually I try not to, and if I do, I feel weird! I have a vegetarian brother, cousin, and step-mom. I figure that they dont like the smell or sight of meat. I'm also currently trying to get rid or cut back on the meat in my diet. I dont think I'll ever be able to call myself an actual true vegie, but I want to be able to pass it up as much as possible.

A few motnhs ago I made a fish at home that was the fresh catch at the grocery store...since it was fresh caught and not farm raised I tried it...(can't remember what it was called). It was stronger than I normally eat, but it was good...however, the next day I got sick with a sore throat virus and was naush...and I opened up the container and smelled that fish...I have not been able to eat a bite of fish since...not even tilapia which is totally mild!!!!

If they were my friends, why would I change who I am to accomodate them? I wouldn't go out of my way to eat meat to piss them off, but I wouldn't NOT order it...that's ridiculous!

I was vegan for 7 years. I was pretty cool with whatever someone wanted to eat. Some things would gross me out sometimes, because I wasn't used to seeing it, but it's part of the deal if you want to be social and not limit yourself to only being friends with people exactly like you!

I don't trust people who don't eat meat or drink alcohol, but that's just me.

My ma always taught me that if the fish smells fishy, that means it's not exactly fresh...but for some reason you guys are making me crave a bit of slightly stinky fish now.

Good point insanitypepper, but I love those stinky fish dishes.

It depends on what the meat options are and what the veg options are. If we're having Asian food, I'll happily eat veggies & tofu, since most Asian places around here use bad quality meat but fry up some mean tofu. And I can't resist Italian eggplant dishes! But if there is a good beef fillet on the menu, I'll usually order that. Now if only there were a way to keep people I'm dining with from ordering stinky fish dishes...

There's no problem with eating meat in front of friends -- but I do prefer to have dishes that can be shared with everyone else. Part of the fun is sharing.

None of my veggie friends have an issue with me eating meat in front of them. (I've asked.) If they did, though, I wouldn't have a problem going meatless for a meal.

For the most part, I eat what I want because if I'm eating out with other, they are usually my friends and I don't have really uptight veggie friends. They're all low-maintenance in this dept as long as they don't have to eat it. I just try not to order fish depending on the friend, because despite them never saying anything to me, I'm sure the smell of fish may be too much for a vegetarian to stomach...especially during a meal.

i don't think eating meat in front of a vegetarian should be a big deal--- as long as everyone can eat what they want without any pressure :)

I don't have a problem with what others eat in front of me, and I expect the same from them. If I want steak, I'm getting steak. If you want something with onions, mushroom, bell peppers, and zucchini (all of which I hate), be my guest. It seems odd that the other person would even care. As long as their food doesn't touch mine, what's the big deal?
