Do You Eat the Skin on Kiwi?

When I tried to unload a package of ripe kiwi fruit on the other Sugar editors, I was shocked by how many people don't care for kiwi. One of them was my boss, who said she couldn't deal with kiwi's mushy texture. I told her she should give the fruit another try, this time with the skin still on, as it adds a crisp element to the eating experience. When I saw the look of skepticism on her face, I had to reassure her that the slightly scratchy skin doesn't taste rough going down, but rather a little bit crispy.

I'll stick with eating the insides of the kiwi only...

No, I when I ate kiwis I peeled/skinned them. I had to give kiwis up though due to developing a slight allergy. Boy, do I miss those delicious treats.

Ewww.... No. You eat the kiwi before it turns really mushy. Whenever I accidentally get kiwi skin on a piece, I always feel like I've swallowed a lot of hairs.

I love kiwi and it works well for my homemade juices. I can't imagine myself just biting straight into it. But I curious... it's worth a try.

I found the cocktail, and it was actually absinthe instead of gin, and no herb (apparently this night was a very fuzzy memory). Lucid Garden Cocktail:

I didn't know the skin was edible; learn something new everyday. I may have to try it.

i love kiwi! but i also never knew you could eat the skin. it's so hairy! i just bought some kiwi, so i'll have to try it out. come to think of it, when sliced kiwi comes in a fruit platter or something at a restaurant, it does come with skin!

Yes, although I slice mine. I'm not the food in the face type of girl; I wear makeup.

and I may be wrong but I could've sworn that I read somewhere that the skin holds a lot of the kiwi's nutritional value?

I am always amazed when I mention that I eat the skin and people look at me like I have 3 heads. When I was young, everyone ate it with the skin on (I grew up in Wisconsin), and now here in PA everyone is always like, "you do WHAT?!" It's delicious, and thin so it doesn't taste rough or anything...yum is right, it adds a crispy texture. I would think it'd be too mushy without the skin.

I didn't realize you could until about a week ago - we serve it as a garnish all the time at the inn where I just started working and it's interesting to see how many people eat the skin and how many peel it off. I used to peel it with a paring knife - it's so much easier to just slice it up with the skin still on.

Ugh, gross...I always peel it first! Peaches are about as fuzzy as I can handle; I can't imagine biting into kiwi skin.

No, but now I'm considering it. Thanks.

Nope, I don't care for kiwi fruit at all. Even in a cocktail that sounded wonderful (gin, cucumber, kiwi, and I forget what herb) I couldn't deal with it. It's not the worst thing ever, but it is far from being my favorite.

I was shocked the first time I read that a few years ago as well. I had always just eaten the insides by cutting the kiwi in half and scooping out the flesh. But once I tried it with the skins and I realized that it was pretty edible, if maybe a bit funky, I've been eating them with the skins ever since.

Yes! Don't eat the two stubby ends, but everything else with the skin on — don't knock it till you've tried it!

This post SHOCKED me! People eat it with the skin on, like biting into an apple? unheard of
