Do You Have a "Sous Chef"?

Do You Have a "Sous Chef"?

Professional chefs get help from their sous chefs, the second in command.

But many home cooks I know also have a go-to kitchen assistant to do the rinsing, chopping, and other prep. It's often a spouse, a kid, or a friend.

How about you?

If I'm cooking, then I generally do all of it from prep to plating. But if the bf is cooking, I step in to be his sous chef, though I have to work really hard to not give my "advice" on how he could do something differently/better.

I am the sous chef! I like the dirty work, like chopping, assembling, plating. Basically the stuff the other person doesn't want to do. I cook for real too, but I love the be a sous and help.

If friends come over then one of them usually jumps in. I sometimes ask my husband but he gets flustered easily in the kitchen so I don't take advantage too often.

When home I am my mom's sous chef but at my apartment I am the head chef (although when my bf and our roommate grill my bf is head chef and our roommate is his sous chef and watching their antics at the grill always makes me laugh)I am also the head dishwasher, the head maid, etc. lol ah well

my BF is always my sous chef (and we've made that joke a dozen times). he's endlessly curious about how to cook (but since i don't want to be poisoned, he hasn't attempted it solo yet). i really like the help. it lets me pay attention to what i'm cooking, rather than worrying about burning something while i'm chopping something else.

I am my mom's sous chef. I enjoy helping her in the kitchen. It's a great opportunity for us to bond and for me to learn how to cook/bake. & believe me - I need all the help I can get!

The fiance. He's an excellent bus boy/dishwasher as well (without being asked!). Helps that his parents used to own a pizza place; it was excellent training.

My girlfriend and I prep for each other. It depends on which one of us is the non-gender-specific monarch of the kitchen for the evening. :)

my fiance and i used to share the responsibility of cooking - so i'm not sure which one of us would be referred to as sous. since i don't eat meat, he did that stuff but i did everything else , and in many ways made the non meat things the feature of the dish.

I AM the sous chef :)! My bf LOVES to cook so when he can stand for someone else to be in the kitchen I try to help with whatever I can!

My husband! He does all the little stuff I don't want to do like clean the chicken, or chop the onions ;] I'm actually surprised he's as helpful as he is, because when I was growing up my Dad did not lift a finger in the kitchen.

Nope. If I am really in a jam my husband will do something super easy -- like take something out of the oven when the timer goes off if I am in the middle of something else -- but he refuses to actually help out in terms of prepping anything or doing any actual cooking.

It really depends. If it's my dish, then my BF will be my sous chef. If it's his dish, then I'll be his. It's fun!

i usually cook and bake alone for my family. usually they're not home to offer assistance. i try to get dinner ready for them by the time they get back from work or errands. if my fiancee is with me, he offers to help. when i'm at home, i accept, but if i cook at his kitchen i kick him out because 2 people cannot fit in that tiny hole of a studio apartment kitchen.

My boyfriend is an awesome sous chef, he loves it! He asks a lot of questions about what we're doing and really enjoys it, and plus I get to make him to the things I hate, like de-fatting chicken and chopping stinky onions.

My fiance acts as my sous chef if I need a hand. It's fun to work together in the kitchen! :D
