Both - usually when they're in something I'll say chickpeas but if alone garbanzo? It's a can of garbanzo beans but hummus is made with chickpeas. I'm weird I guess.

Garbanzo beans, yum! I never even heard anyone say chickpea until I was in my late teens, and it was a while after that that I figured out they were the same thing.

"They have always been garbanzo. Never heard of chickpeas until the Food Network came on." my mom called them chickpeas long before food network was ever in existence

I've always called them 'brain beans'. They look like little brains. Not always a popular observation. But tasty brain beans they are.

both...these are great when mixed with fava beans in a salad with olive oil, lemon, tomatoes, and fresh herbs--it's delicious hot or cold.

I must agree with Marynan... & Sugarcat, it's so fun to say and thanks to Finnlover for the French lesson (I love languages). Rachael Ray has a recipe for fried/sauteed garbanzo that I've yet to try but it sounds so yummy. Sometimes I call my dog garbanzo cause he loves them and it's a cute name for a dog.
