Food Trend Predictions For the Year 2010

Let's Dish: What Foods Are Getting Their Big Break This Year?

In the spirit of the New Year, we've done plenty of reflecting on the headlines and highlights of 2009, including the biggest food trends at the end of the decade.

Now it's time to weigh in on the coming year. I've got more than enough predictions for what's going to blow up over the next 12 months. Among my guesses: Ramen will have its day, only to be pushed aside by pho; unctuous beef tendon will replace overdone pork belly; and macarons will upstage mini cupcakes. Other things that will go mainstream: sustainable seafood, chicharrones, castelvetranos, tamales, neo tiki culture, yakitori, and anything that ends in "wurst."

What are your predictions?

Would mini-bundt cakes and mini pies be a new trend/fad or are they "so over" like cupcakes? Just wondering...:)

I agree with AmberHoney...more people will be "dining in" at dinner parties, and I see potlucks becoming more popular. "Potluck" doesn't have to mean low-brow, just meaning friends and family coming together and sharing. Homecooking can very good! :)

My city is pretty ethnically diverse, so pho is old news to me... how surprising that it's just catching on! Good though!

I think pho's becoming pretty popular where I live. I keep seeing restaurants that displays signage stating they serve pho.

I certainly hope sustainable seafood goes mainstream! I've been eating only sustainable for the past 6 months and my choices are nowhere near as limit as I would have thought. Not any more costly than eating non-sustainable, either. Yakitori... I always called it kebabs... this had been my summer party food of choice for EONS. Sort of a pain in the ass to cut and prepare but it's also a fancy and affordable way to serve steak and shrimp to 30 people... I predict more fast food places offering veggie burgers, and Middle-Eastern and Puerto Rican fast food will start to be a big business. Also more soy products than just tufo. Edamame is hot now and tempeh is quickly on the rise.

I'm not psychic about anything expect maybe "home cooking" and "dinner parties" since no one can afford to eat out anymore.

Smoked blue cheese. Rouge Creamery out of Oregon makes a wonderful smokey blue. Carr's of Wisconsin is nice as well. Mind-blowing on burgers with sauteed mushrooms, and...BACON! :feedme:
