Summer heat calls for refreshing aperitifs that fizz and sparkle, but as the days gracefully and gradually dim and mellow, a cocktail with a hair more heft is just the trick. Today's tipple, an elegant option whose complex flavor comes from a combination of ginger, green tea, and cognac is perfectly tailored to this transitional period. While light in body, it proudly proclaims "I am a cocktail" on first sip, but won't quite knock you off your feet as a negroni or old-fashioned might. Embrace Summer's sunset by trying the recipe for yourself.
- 3 mint leaves, plus a sprig for garnish
1 small slice of fresh ginger
1/4 ounce ginger simple syrup
1 1/2 ounces Cognac
1 ounce iced ginger-lemon green tea, such as Kusmi
1/4 ounce freshly squeezed lemon juice, optional
- Muddle the mint, ginger, and simple syrup in the bottom of a cocktail shaker. Add the cognac, tea, and lemon juice, if using. Fill the shaker with ice and shake until chilled.
- Strain into a chilled glass. Garnish with a sprig of mint, gently massaging the mint leaves between your fingertips to release their oils first.
