Happy Hour: Blanton's Single Barrel Bourbon

Happy Hour: Blanton's Single Barrel Bourbon

Though I enjoy the occasional Manhattan, I'm not usually a drinker of straight bourbon. Like scotch, the Kentucky libation always seemed more like a sippin' drink for old dudes. But lately, I've been acquainting myself with these potent brown liquors, and I have to say that neither scotch nor bourbon is anything to be afraid of. (That is, as long as you don't drink too much.)

Case in point: Blanton's Single Barrel Bourbon, distilled in Frankfort, KY, has taught me that truly excellent bourbons go down easy — almost too easy — even without a mixer. I recently picked up a bottle of a batch made especially for a San Francisco spirits shop, but you can buy it online for about $50. From the waxed-sealed racehorse-adorned top to the hand-scrawled date, Blanton's is clearly a special-occasion bottle of hooch.

One sip and you'll understand what separates high-end bourbon from everyday booze like Jim Beam. The rich, caramel liquid has the decadent taste of toffee with a hint of woodsy, almost fiery flavor. It's best served over ice or just "neat" in a glass, but if you simply must dilute it, I recommend a bit of water. Have you gotten into high-end bourbons? If so, tell me your opinions below.

I love Elijah Craig, reasonably priced & very smooth. I recently tried Woodford Reserve and it was good, too. I like to mix bourbon with Diet Rite, tastes lovely.

I haven't tried Bourbon before but I have been wanting to, I just don't want to get a bad taste and then I am turned off from it. I will have to see about taking a sip the next time I am out and see if investing in a bottle would be worth it.

I love bourbon. I like to drink bourbon + soda water. I've always had Maker's Mark on my shelf, but the Wall Street Journal recently wrote a great review of Evan Williams whiskey. In a blind taste test, most people preferred the Evan Williams over the Maker's Mark, and the Evans is MUCH cheaper! I bought some to taste, and have made the switch. Now I keep the Evans Williams on my shelf instead.

Bourbon is, by far, my favorite liquor. I'm usually pretty happy with my Jim Beam, but I'll have to pick this one up sometime as a special treat. Thanks for the recommendation, Yum!

I picked up a bottle of this a few weeks ago. Great stuff. What's interesting is that they allow distributors to buy batches from a particular barrel, so if your shopkeeper knows what he's doing you can get a subtly better product, even within the same vintage.

I'm not a big Bourbon fan but you make it sound appealing Yum! I will try if offered in the future, but I probably won't shell out any cash for it myself.

Every winter I get a bottle of the good stuff. Something my dad taught me, this definitely keeps you warm when it's blizzarding outside.

Even since I reached legal drinking age many years ago, I have been a bourbon or whiskey sipper. My late dad was the one who helped me learn to appreciate it. One thing he taught me was buy the best you can afford, and don't be afraid to try products from smaller distilleries. It may or may not be high end, but one of my absolute favorites is Rebel Yell. Cute name aside, it has a wonderful flavor, very smooth. At one time, you could only buy it in the southern US. I was going to college in Texas, so I would give my dad 2 bottles each Christmas. He always thought that was the coolest gift.:)

If someone else is buying, I've been known to drink the high-end bourbons. But I just don't have the cash on hand to indulge this particular passion in the face of many other libations. My friends in college used to do something awful with horrible bourbon, which was to slug it and chase it with peppermint schnapps. I never did get over that. Blech.

I haven't yet... But I was born & raised (22 years of my life at least) in KY, just down the road from Bardstown. Maybe this year I'll make it to the Bourbon Festival though.
