Happy Hour: Shiner Bock

Last night I had a horrible, incurable hot flash. I opened the fridge to cool down and — to my glee — found Shiner Bock staring back at me.

If you aren't from Texas, you may not know Shiner, but if you are, then it's a household name. Shiner Bock is produced by the state's oldest independent brewing company, Spoetzl Brewery, which turns 100 next year. Shiner isn't the most complex beer to ever exist, but it's cheap, refreshing, and easy to drink.

Since the highly-carbonated, caramel-brown lager has a head that doesn't last long, it's delicious to guzzle right out of the bottle. It has little aroma and an earthy, malty, toasted flavor. Of course, it's perfect for a hot day, whether you're in Texas or not.

Have you ever had the chance to try Shiner? If so, what did you think of it?

i've never heard of this but seeing as how my fiance is from TX and his whole family lives there, i'm going to see if he's ever had it and if we can try it sometime. i have to admit that sometimes i'm a bit scared to try new beer type things, but i think that i owe it to myself to try this one

We always have Shiner in the fridge....and in Texas, i would say lonestar is what you're forced to drink when you have no other choice! But maybe that's because we're broke...Shiner is definitely our everyday beer. we have special beers too. Though we NEVER have lonestar...ew. My Husband has a Shiner or two every night with dinner! He also likes the black lager, but we're always stocked on the bock.

Shiner Bock, it's what you drink in Texas when you have no other choice. ;) It's a decent beer. A bit darker and heavier and more interesting than your run of the mill macro. I prefer other local brews to Shiner at home, but Shiner Bock always works great when you're buying beer for other people and have no idea what they like. Everyone drinks Shiner Bock. Spoetzl also makes a black lager that is really really good.

I lived on Shiner Bock when I was in grad school in TX. It still has a special place in my heart. I'm happy I can get it in the Bay Area, but it really doesn't taste the same unless it's accompanied by some barbecue from the Salt Lick or tacos from Polvos. Sigh.
