Hosea Wins Top Chef

Hosea: "I Am Not Going to Apologize For Winning"

The fifth season of Top Chef is officially over, and in an interesting turn of events the new winner was neither Carla nor Stefan, but the strapping young baldy from Boulder, CO, Hosea. Since speaking with Hosea on the phone last Friday, I have a new perspective on the somewhat misunderstood chef. He actually has a degree in engineering and looks at the kitchen with a scientific mind. His last meal, humbly, would be the perfect BLT. To find out what Hosea had to say about winning and his relationship with fellow contestant, Leah,

On winning: It feels great! It's kind of overwhelming. I still haven't gotten used to the idea of it. It has really humbled me. Yes, I'm very pleased, but I'm not claiming that I am a better cook than everyone else.

I just happened to cook the best meal. I was at the Miami Food and Wine Festival last week and Daniel Boulud shook my hand and asked me when we're going to cook, and that amazed me! I think I'll get a lot of great opportunities out of winning.

On the people who don't think he should have won: I don't know why there are haters out there. I don't understand it. I put my best work in at the end there. I talked to Tom yesterday and he told me I did the best job and that is why I won. I don't know why people are so against me. I stuck in there, I worked my ass off, and I'm really proud of myself for my accomplishments. There's nothing I can do about the way other people will perceive me. I won. I belonged there. I don't understand why there's the hatred out there. I have a big passion for food, I love what I do. I have proven myself time and time again — that I belong here — and I am not going to apologize for winning.

On his relationship with Leah: We are good friends. We talk a lot. We enjoy each other's company, but I live in Colorado and she lives in New York. We are both single now and we do like each other. We have kissed each other since the show ended. I think if we lived in the same city we would probably be dating. I am having dinner with her tonight, but I'm not going to tell you where!

On Bravo's portrayal of him: You know it's hard to say. The editing is interesting for sure to watch. It's not just about the food we made. For me it was about the food, so it would have been nice of them to show that I am smart guy, I am a caring person. I have an engineering degree. Because of the editing they really focused on the thing with Leah and then the rivalry with Stefan. But that was about five percent of what I talked about!

On what he's learned from participating in Top Chef: The biggest lesson I took away from the show is that I still have a lot to learn. I have so much left that I haven't seen or cooked or learned. I have a long way to go as a chef. I am still like a baby in this line of work. I am thrilled to have this opportunity and to have proved to myself that I can learn it and do it. I am very scientific and pragmatic. I think of the smartest way to cook. You know there is a lot of math involved when you are running a kitchen.

On working with Richard Blais: Having Rich on my side was a huge help! He was so perfect for what I needed. He offered a lot of advice, but never tried to get in the way of what I was doing. He worked his ass off. That guy is badass! He is quick and he did the perfect plating.

On what's next: I'm taking some time off to be with my dad. He's gotten worse. I am going to see what I can do for the family in terms of the sickness. My dad was diagnosed with cancer nine months ago and it's spreading. He's not doing very well, so I want to be with him. As far as the future, I'm partnering with a food company to create a product line. I'm working on my own restaurant, which will hopefully be open in the next nine months. In the short term future, I am staying here in Colorado. It's where all my contacts are. I work with a lot of local farmers, ranchers, and growers. I want to stay here for awhile, for at least the next year. I'm not sure what the future holds. Hopefully I'll be doing a restaurant in Boulder or Denver, but I don't want to talk too much about it because I don't want to jinx it.

Such silly and inane comments. It was a contest and Hosea won it. He was judged by an impartial panel to have done whatever was necessary and he did this while competing against some very good chefs. The only losers are those posting such childish posts. You know, the cheap shot artists. Hosea was not my choice, but my hats off to him. He won fair and square, based on every criteria the show arranged and he will thrive and you silly, weakminded muttonheads can only stew in your own bile.

Don't apologize, just realize that you boned it most of the season, stayed in the middle, and didn't really deserve it when stacked up against some of the other competitors.

I am sick that this fool won, I am sick that Carla got paired with that idiot Casey, I am sick that Carla listened to that idiot Casey, It was a bad decision all the way around and now this jackazz is standing there happy like he did something great. Boo Hosea!!

Top Chef is all about food, of course it belongs on Yumsugar! I'm sure now that the show is over, we'll have fewer posts about it anyhow. Haters stop hating, negativity is an ugly color.

I don't think Hosea should have won, but I kinda feel bad for him. It has to suck to win and to see people not happy about it. The negative feedback on the Top Chef blogs and ONTD has been intense!

How about now? Now can we stop talking about Top Chef? This stuff belongs on Popsugar, not Yum.

Unless they change the rules, he won fair and square. Maybe they should change the title to Top Chef Tonight!

This season was mostly uninspiring (with a few exceptions), and an uninspiring chef won. Let's do an all stars and Hosea & Ilan would be at the bottom.

Sorry but I just never cared for Hosea, he always seemed really immature and a mediocre talent compared to others on the show. I really could care less that he cheated on his girlfriend with Leah, what did it for me was letting Ariane take all of the heat for the farm challenge. That and all the whining about beating Stefan. I get the analogy of the Super Bowl but this is Top Chef, not Top Meal. I honestly thinking past performance should come into play for the finale. And as for editing, yes maybe Bravo only showed 5% of what he said, but he did say it all. They can only work with the material you give them. I do hope his father gets better though.

They couldn't justify giving the prize to Stefan and his terrible attitude, and so Hosea was almost the default. The ending was a bit disappointing.

I totally agree with PartySugar... Hosea was just mediocre and if Top Chef continues to do past season all star competitions, I'm sure Hosea would not stand a chance against any other finalist OR almost any other past competitor. As for being a "hater," Hosea did it to himself. Everyone has a choice whether or not to do things that will screw them over, and he chose Leah. Ewh. That make me shiver with disgust. All in all, the shows over, so what can you do?

In the words of Stefan: Douche. Bag.

Oooh, way to go, Partysugar, on getting the dirt on him and Leah! -- I'm sorry to hear about his dad. I hope he gets better soon. I'm sure his father is very proud of him. If it were a contest based on the best overall chef (as the name "Top Chef" implies), I do think Stefan should have won. But I like the analogy Tom Colicchio made in his (indignant, I thought) latest blog, the finale is kind of like the Super Bowl. Even if a team has a 12-0 record, it doesn't mean they won't bomb in the Super Bowl. Besides, as Hosea said on the show, Carla and Stefan already owned their own restaurants. I'm sure they both will become immensely more profitable and successful. Hosea probably needed this win the most of the three of them, so he could launch his own career. I wish him the best.

I think if you look at some of the finalists and winners of past seasons (Richard, Marcel, Hung, Ilan, Stephanie, etc.) you realize Hosea could never stand a chance against them.

it's interesting to see how is he now that the show is done. of course we know that there's a lot to be said for editing for the show - so i just hope that he sees success.

I'm sorry but I don't think he deserved it.

He wasnt a consistant competitor.. he wasnt good at deserts (being a good rounded chef) His attitude stank.. he used cheap tricks like using all the ingerdients or sabotaging (Aligator meat and Stefan)... he cheated on his girlfriend on TV with no real sense of shame.. Just in general he didnt deserve to win. But then again.. 'hes amaerican'.. they would never have let a euro win. Pity as Stefan is 10x the man he is..10x the chef too!

Let's summarize what will undoubtedly be the comments so that we can all get over them. 1. What a douchnozzle! He cheated on his girlfriend. He deserves to be single. Waaah! 2. I hated him! He's such a boring and mediocre person. I'm horribly disappointed in the judges. Waaah! 3. I wanted Carla to win. She's so awesome. She totally brought the love. Waaah! ...hootie. 4. I wanted Stefan to win. He's so awesome. He's a better chef than Hosea. Waaah! 5. Top Chef sucks now, and even though I've watched four seasons of good television, this is it. I'm done. Waaah! 6. Can we please stop talking about Top Chef? Why are we still talking about Top Chef? Waaah! 7. OMG, you totally spoiled it for me! Waaah! OK. Now that that's out of the way, nice job, Hosea. I hope his Dad recovers, I hope his restaurant succeeds, and I hope he continues to learn and grow as a chef. I think he did a great job with the finale, with his dishes, with commanding his sous chef and using Richard to the fullest potential. I can't wait to hear what they have to say about each other at the reunion in a couple days.
