Can't Stand Peeling Garlic? Try This Clever Tool

Mar 13 2016 - 2:00pm

I don't think I'm alone in saying this: I really, really hate peeling garlic [1]. It's tedious, makes my fingers sticky (and stinky), and takes far longer than something so simple should. Because of this, I've tried many tips and tricks that promise to speed through this task: smashing down with the flat of a chef's knife works well if intact cloves aren't a priority, and vigorously shaking the cloves between two mixing bowls [2] is clever if you have a whole head to peel. Still, most of the time, I turn to a — gasp — unitasker [3] to make it easier, OXO's silicone garlic peeler [4] ($7). Simple in design, it easily slips cloves out of their papery skins, thanks to the grippiness of silicone. To use, pop a garlic clove in, roll it under your palm on a hard surface, like a cutting board, and that's it. No fuss, no stinky fingers, and no dirtying two mixing bowls just to peel a clove or two.
