Simple Tip: Seed Jalapeños in the Plastic Bag

Whenever I use jalapeños, or any other spicy chile for that matter, I always employ the same simple technique for seeding that ensures my hands and eyes won't burn. Here's how I do it:

  1. Flatten the plastic baggy that the jalapeños come in on the counter next to a cutting board. Place the jalapeño on the cutting board and slice the stem off, then slice in half lengthwise.
  2. Set the jalapeño half in the middle of the plastic baggy. Fold the plastic over to cover the jalapeño.
  3. Taking care not to cut the plastic with your nail, gently scrap out the seeds into the plastic.
  4. Repeat with remaining half and prepare jalapeño according to your recipe.

It's a lot easier than wearing gloves! How do you seed chiles? Share your methods below.

I use gloves, years ago when I first used a jalapeno in a recipe, I didn't wear gloves and just handled the pepper- needless to say I will never make that mistake again, I have extremely sensitive skin and my hands burned all night long! The only thing that helped was vinegar and then I ended up stinking but it was so worth it!

Ha, cool tip. I do something pretty similar...I make "baggie gloves" out of sandwich baggies when I cut jalapenos. I put them around my hands and then just peel them off when I'm done.

Brilliant tip, Party, if I must say so myself. Chief, I've done that a few times. Take out the contact, try to put it back in, and .... AHHHHHHHH!!!!!!

I usually just scrape the seeds out with a teaspoon and don't rub my eyes when de-seeding chillis. Can't really buy many different types of chillis here though and the only jalapenos you can get are in a jar.

Great tip, although I don't normally seed my jalapeños. I like heat. :)
