Take Hummus, Now Make It Better With These Toppings

Maybe your batch of homemade hummus is missing that je ne sais quoi, or maybe the store-bought variety needs some serious doctoring. Either way, the hummus desires a handful of toppings to make it taste just right. Use these ideas to get you started.

Drizzle it with extra-virgin olive oil. Pour a hefty amount of extra-virgin olive oil on top of the hummus, and watch as it pools around the crevices. Restaurants do it, and so should you.

Add a pinch of chopped fresh herbs. Chop up parsley, mint, cilantro, basil, and/or dill to instantly freshen the taste. Drizzle on pesto for a creamier consistency.

Dash on dried herbs and spices. The most common include za'atar (a Mediterranean spice and herb blend) and paprika, but even Western spice blends like Old Bay seasoning complement the garbanzo bean dip.

Bring on the briny and roasted. Diced olives and crumbled feta amp up the salty umami-ness of the hummus while roasted red peppers and roasted garlic cloves boost the comforting, toasted flavor notes.

Don't forget nuts, peas, and seeds. Toasted pine nuts, whole chickpeas, and pomegranate seeds look and taste elegant topping a bowl of hummus.
