McDonald's [6] is reinventing the term fast food — or at least fast coffee. The chain is testing coffee kiosks at two locations in Chicago and it's exactly what it sounds like. For $3, you can customize your McDonald's coffee using this touchscreen machine. There are no surprises in your drink flavor options; the machine dispenses varying types of lattes, mochas, and cappuccinos as well as different milk options.
As Brand Eating points out, this isn't exactly a novel concept for McDonald's. The McCafe's espresso and steamed milk is already brewed by a similar machine. It's essentially an automated machine [7] to allow customers to make their own drinks instead of employees. McDonald's has also experimented with self-serve customizable burger machines [8] recently as a response to minimum wage hikes.
