Today at all of its San Francisco locations, The Melt [1] expands its menu beyond grilled cheeses. The new cheesy menu items include burgers, chicken sandwiches, french fries, and mac and cheese. It's carb-y comfort to the max. Of all the new items, these particular ones captured the attention of my taste buds — including a s'more melt that we're hoping to re-create at home.
Truffle Mac and Well-Dressed Fries
I wasn't expecting to fall so hard and fast for these well-dressed fries ($4), which are loaded with an aged-cheese sauce (made in-house!) and crumbled bacon. In-N-Out's animal-style fries have met their match. These are a must-indulge. The T-Mac (truffle mac) ($6), pictured left, is also a carb-filled delight to enjoy on a chilly day. Although not pictured, it's filled with pieces of sautéed mushrooms.
Mission Burger Melt
Mission Burger Melt ($6) is worthy of ordering, as it is cooked to medium-rare perfection and served with plenty of avocado and spicy garnishes. Next time, I'll try it with the wheat bun or perhaps get it as a lettuce wrap for a lighter lunch.
Bird Chicken Melt
I was really not expecting the Bird ($6) to be my favorite of all the items. The chicken breast is pounded to a thin patty and dressed with pickled onion, spinach, and caesar dressing. The bun, slightly sweet yet hearty, is the best part. I could easily eat one of these sandwiches every day.
S'more Melt
What used to be a secret menu item is now available to all. I ordered the S'more Melt ($4) with a big swirl of vanilla soft-serve (+$1.50).
S'more Melt
The S'more Melt is filled with 75-percent Guittard dark chocolate, marshmallows, and Biscoff. The potato bread is perfectly buttered and toasted, and the inside is melty to perfection. We have to get the recipe. It's the ultimate rainy-day sandwich.
