Review: Jamba Juice Fruit and Veggie Smoothies

Taste Test: Jamba Juice's Fruit & Veggie Smoothies

Jamba Juice sure has a lot going on. It just rolled out probiotic smoothies and has been testing custom-blendable frozen yogurt, a new menu item that the company plans to expand over the course of the year. And beginning today, stores across the country will offer smoothies blended from both fruit and vegetables.

For now, the company's new Fruit & Veggie Smoothies come in three flavors: BerryUpBeet, Apple 'n Greens, and Orange Carrot Karma. All contain three servings of fruits and vegetables in every drink serving and are free of artificial flavors, preservatives, and high-fructose corn syrup. To find out what's in each flavor — and what the Sugar verdict was on each of the drinks — keep reading.

  • Orange Carrot Karma: Most tasters, including myself and Susi, were underwhelmed by this blend of carrots, orange juice, and bananas, which had little carrot flavor and an oddly chalky texture. But Mandy found the mild blend to be easy to drink.
  • Apple 'n Greens: I definitely witnessed dark, leafy greens being whirred into this combination of carrots, spinach, green bell peppers, and kale, but oddly enough, the bitter leaves didn't have a strong flavor. A hint of apple and a healthy green color made this my favorite of the three smoothies.
  • BerryUpBeet: Katie and Susi gave top nods to this smoothie, which was chock-full of beets, berries, spinach, kale, carrots, and broccoli, although Mandy docked points for its "sulfuric aftertaste."

Vegetable haters will rejoice, as the smoothies were easy to drink and tasted rather innocuous. But that was also their downfall: they had no true fruit or vegetable flavor. "I'd much rather eat a vegetable," Susi remarked. I couldn't help but agree. Call me a tree-hugger, but I like the unmasked flavor of kale! Will you try these smoothies?

I used to be a huge Jamba Juice fan but stopped due to the high calories and sugar content. I admit, these juices are super refreshing on a hot day but I now prefer to drink true super food shakes that provide more nutrient dense calories :) Recently wrote a post about it. May be an interesting read for you:

I tried kale in a smoothie once. Even the fruit couldn't disguise the AWFULNESS that is kale. But I'd be willing to try again!

I've been wondering how long it would take for a major smoothie joint to finally catch on to the green smoothie craze! The natural sweetness from fruits like bananas, oranges, and apples is much stronger than the taste of leafy greens like spinach and kale, and when added in the right proportions, you get an amazingly tasty and nutritious smoothie.

This is a great review — love that you had a bunch of tasters weigh in! Haven't been to Jamba in awhile but the Apple 'n Greens is tempting.

If there was a Jamba Juice in my area, I'd try the smoothie with the kale. I'm all for a masked taste of kale.
