Review of Lance Cracker Creations

Taste Test: Lance Cracker Creations

As a schoolkid, I grew up eating the same thing for lunch every day — a whole wheat deli meat and cheese sandwich with a pear and baby carrots. Our Michelle Obama-approved pantry had nary a cracker, chip, cookie, or cake in sight. So it was a bit like finding lost treasure every time I managed to get my hands on a four-pack of Lance Captain's Wafers at school. When I recently discovered Lance had released a new line of all-natural snack packs, the 10-year-old in me couldn't resist giving them a try.

Cracker Creations are described as "seasoned crackers with a cream cheese filling" and tout "real cheese, real vegetables, and 5 grams of whole grain per serving." They come in boxes of six individually sealed cracker twin-packs, in two savory flavors. Find out what we thought of them when you read on.

Parmesan Herb: Both cracker flavors had a generous amount of cream filling, which was soft but a tad grainy. I did detect the flavor of real Parmesan, but the herbs were questionable. "This one has a fake herby flavor," Katie remarked when I handed her a bite. She was right: I didn't see any actual herbs listed — only a shady-sounding "herb seasoning."

Garden Vegetable: "This one tastes more natural," Katie remarked. "I feel like there's some sun-dried tomato going on." I had to agree: it wasn't nearly as artificial-tasting. In fact, she wasn't far off: the ingredients listed included a "vegetable blend" of carrot, onion, cabbage, tomato, red bell pepper, and green bell pepper.

Both left me scrambling for water, although the Parmesan Herb had nearly twice the amount of sodium compared to its counterpart. And the ingredients? I gave up counting after the number 30. Although they're "whole grain," the fiber content clocks in at one gram per serving. There's no question that, like with my brown-bagged school lunch, I've outgrown a taste for these crackers: I'd much rather sit down to a packet of saltines and a block of cream cheese. Still, they're not the worst of snack foods, and an acceptable substitute in a scenario where perishables aren't an option. Would you try these?
